Pontlottyn area
« on: Friday 18 January 13 13:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I wonder if we have a member who knows the area around Pontlottyn.  I am endeavouring to trace the footsteps of the enumerator of District 4 in 1841.  Luckily I was raised in the village of Brithdir so I am very familiar with the most of the farms named in the lower part of the district but I am stuck on one namely Pen y Wain Goch.  Following the enumerator's route Pen y Wain Goch is between Tynewydd farm and Brithdir Ucha farm so I presume it could be on the moorland above Pontlottyn?.  Can someone please help with its location.

Regards, Roy

Hi, I am not from that area but I found an old parish map of the area that MIGHT help.

I can't see anything on there but maybe they have spelt it wrong?

Hi
Thanks for taking interest and I appreciate the map; unfortunately I couldn't not see the name Pen y Wain Goch, however the map was useful.

Many thanks, Roy

I couldn't see it either but I am wondering if they have meant "pen y waun" or similar? I have found a map which has "pen y  waun" cottages but I am not sure if this is in the area you are looking at or is a little further away. This is from a 2007 surveillance.

Hi Roy
on the Vision of Britain site;
click on historical maps tab, then click on Ordnance Survey First Series 1:63360. it is a bit of a fiddle to scroll the map across the UK to get to Sheet 42, but it has Pen y Waun Goch and below it -Tir Evan Gwyn. This is directly left of Abertysswg on the map.
The map isn't very detailed though

Hi Margaret
Thanks for the tip; I learn something everyday being a member of RootsChat.  Pen Y Wain Goch is in the area I thought it should be but it is always nice to actually see it named on a map.
