JANE GANDER, 1777 HURSTPIERTPOINT
« on: Saturday 19 January 13 12:18 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am stuck on my elusive 4xgt gradmother Jane GANDER b 1777 Hurstpierpoint, d 1863 Cuckfield.
I would like to find her parents and siblings but up to now I haven't been able to find anything  ???

Jane married Michael HARMES  born abt 1782 Bolney  although its debateable that is the right Michael Harmes?

I connected Michael to Hannah Heasman and Michael Harmes and have taken the line right back but I have a niggling feeling I have gone wrong  :-\  On his son Edward's marriage certificate Michael is listed as a game keeper.

Michael and Jane married 12 July 1812, Bolney and had two children Michael b 1812 and Edward b 1816 both born in Cuckfield.  I have all the records for Edward (my line) but nothing for his brother Michael b 1812 Cuckfield.

Thank you
Carole  :)

There are no Harmes baptisms in Cuckfield prior to 1838 when Robert and Elizabeth are having children.
Where were yours baptised in 1812 and 1814?
Ah, I see Michael Harms 1812 was baptised at Bolney but no sign of Edward.

I have the disc with the parish registers for Bolney and I think I found the transcripts for Cuckfield parish registers, which is where I managed to get a lot of my early info from not forgetting the LDS records  ;).

Edward was bapt 28 July 1816 Bolney and I haven't got a bapt for Michael 1812 just the 1841 and 1851 census.  On the 1851 census he is a lodger working as a gamekeeper, like his dad.

I forgot I had these two census.

1841 census: HO107/1111/6/39 p 1 Cuckfield

1851 census: HO107/1642/247/p 24

Jane,  however, is totally elusive.

Now found Edward - Harmes - and it says they are of Cuckfield.  Michael was baptised 22/11/1812

Hi

Yes, on some of the census they have Edward as being born in Cuckfield but I think that is nr Bolney.

1841 census RG 9/25/ 50 p 19.
Jane is living in Hammersmith and Michael isn't with her.  I think he died in 1825?
She is living with:

William Sargeson 60 Clerk
Mary Sargenson 50
Samual Edwards 60 Ind
John Woodgatt 30 MS
Stephen Penfold 35 MS
Jane Harmes 60 FS
Mary Evans 55 MS

I am nor sure what MS and FS mean.  Also I recognise the names Sargeson and Penfold as Sussex names and I think a Penfold married a Harmes somewhere along the line?

1851 census HO107/690/5/ 55 p 21 Hammersmith
She is living with son Edward and his family at Chapel St Hammersmith.

1861 census,RG 9/25/ 50/ p 19
mother Jane is living with Edward and his family at 26 Waterloo Street, Hammersmith.  She then goes back to Cuckfield where she dies in 1863 Cuckfield Vol 2b Page 92.

Edward was a tailor and married Elizabeth Henley 1 Aug 1942, Westminster.  It was from their marriage register that I saw that father Michael was a game keeper.

Thanks for your help Sillgen  :)

When you say Jane died Cuckfield in 1863 do you mean in Cuckfield village or the registration district?  The latter covers many villages so without getting the death certificate you cannot tell exactly where she died.
MS and FS are male and female servants.

Interesting that on 22.5.1833 in Bolney there is a marriage for Jane Harmes widow to Henry Marchant.
Could there be two of them?
Michael's age at burial in 1825 is 43 and it says of Cuckfield.
