Where might Margaret Marshall be buried?
« on: Saturday 19 January 13 21:56 GMT (UK) »
Margaret Allan was born in 1870 in Cathcart Renfrewshire, daughter of William Allan and Catherine Clark. In 1894 she married Robert Marshall in New Monkland. In 1901 she is in Falkirk Stirlingshire. On 17 Nov 1953 she died at Kirkwood Cres., Crossford Dunfermline according to SP. Her son robert registered her death. As you can see she moved around a lot. I do not know yet where or when her husband Robert died. Is there any chance of establishing where she was buried?
Kind regards, Nan

I see you are also an ocean away from Scotland.

I suggest you check if the place of death was a nursing home of some sort.  According to SP, my great grandmother died in Buckhaven.  She was also quite elderly and her son registered the death.  After searching all around that area, I was able to obtain help from Fife Council in establishing that she was buried with her parents in the family lair in Largo, fairly far away from Buckhaven.

Good luck in your search, Mary

Thank you for your reply. I'll take your suggestion and inquire with the Fife council. I did google Kirkwood Crescent in Crossford Dunfermline and the area seemed to be residential but I guess there could have been a small nursing home there.
Kind regards,
Nan

Nan

The Death announcement in the Dunfermline Press doesn't give any indication of where she was buried. The Acknowlegement in the Press the following week doesn't say either. It does indicate that the service was at Gillespie Memorial Church, Dunfermline. You could email there to see if they keep records office[replace with 'at' symbol]gillespiechurch.org.

The address in Crossford, according to the Valuation Roll, was (probably still is) a private house and garden with Robert Marshall as owner and occupier.

Likeliest place for interment would be Leys Park Road Cemetery in Dunfermline although there is another cemetery, Douglas Bank Cemetery in Pattiesmuir, Dunfermline about the same distance from Crossford. Fife Council should be able to help.

Thank you Davaar36. You have provided a little more information for both Margaret Marshall and her son Robert. I suspected that Margaret had died at her son's home because when I googled the area from here in Canada it looked residential. I will email the church and see if there is a record there of where Margaret was buried. Every little piece of the puzzle helps to give us a better picture.
I really appreciate your help.

Nan

You mentioned that you didn't know when Margaret's husband died. Robert Marshall, farmer usual residence Chamberfield Farm Dunfermline, husband of Margaret Allan, died October 31st 1943 at 20 Buchanan Street, Dunfermline. He was 72 years of age. Informant son Robert. I'm pretty sure that Buchanan St address would be the Garthdee Nursing Home which closed years ago. Robert senior's parents listed as John Marshall, farmer, and Mary Marshall m.s. Waddell both deceased.

Hello again Dod,
Thank you so much for the information on Robert Marshall. Rootschatters are so kind and generous with their time and efforts. I did know Robert's parents' names and had found them on several censuses. Another Rootchatter, Forfarian, provided me with lots of information on the Waddell family. My family tree is beginning to fill out.
Do you have easy access to the Valuation Rolls for Dunfermline? I don't believe that they are accessible online. As I mentioned in my first post Margaret and Donald moved around quite a lot. I was wondering how long they made their home in Dunfermline.
Once again a big thank you, Dod.
Kind regards, Nan

You Might also ask NorrieG if she has a tombstone incsription for Margaret and Robert Marshall as she has photographed numerous cemeteries in that area. Her posts are here on the Fife thread.  good luck in your search   Beans

Thank you for the suggestion, Beans. I did ask Norrie because I saw she had so much info on graves in Fife. Unfortunately she was unable to help me. I have contacted the Gillespie Memorial Church where the service was held. Perhaps they will have some information. In the meantime I'll continue to search.
