Morey Family from Havant
« on: Monday 21 January 13 17:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I wondered if anyone was researching the Morey family from Havant?  My ggGrandmother was Mary, born 1844 to George and Mary (nee Morey!), but I'm getting confused as there seem to be several George Morey's of similar ages and I'm not sure how to make sure I have the right one!

Thanks

Hi Rosie,

Mary was born 1844 and appears with her family: parents George and Mary and siblings John, Samuel, Martha and George in the 1851 census.  Although Mary was born in Havant they have moved to Berkeley Street, Portsea by now.  I THINK (but heaven knows how she got there) by 1861 Mary is in service to a Robert Carpenter in Stoke Damerel, Plymouth (I can't prove this is my Mary).  After that I have her pretty well documented and proved.  My problem is mainly her father - there are several George's that could be her father!

But I don't think it is likely that they were all born in Havant as Mary's father was - see the 1851 census record.

George Morey baptised 26 Sep 1813 in Havant, son of George and Ann.

George Morey married Ann Restell in Havant 2 Jun 1811.

This George was also a bricklayer, I think - he and Ann are in Havant in 1841.

And he was possibly baptised in Havant in 1789 on 13 February, son of George & Ruth.  This record fits with his age range in 1841.  He died in Havant in 1845 - there is an admon listed in the Hampshire Record Office catalogue.

This makes me smile as it raises the possibility that my husband and I may be very distantly related!  My married name is Restell and hubby's family are local from way back - the name is not that common.  Will look into it - thank you Nell!

Hi Sunic,

I think that we may be related!

My ggp are Mary Morey & Samuel Weston who married 25th Dec 1862 - she was 19 and he was 25.

Are these the same people?

Cheers,

Phil
