Civil registration and Catholic?
« on: Monday 21 January 13 21:19 GMT (UK) »
John Martin married Agnes George, 04/09/1854 in Saintfield where both denominations given as catholic. On the same day they are married at Lisburn Registry Office.
I read that catholics didn't have civil registrations at this time. Or did some of them? Or could it indicate that they were different faiths?

Thanks.

Hi,
Civil Registration of Protestant and Registration Office marriages started in 1845. Civil registration of Catholic church marriages did not commence until 1864.

Is the informationfrom an online database?
Civil registration of non-Catholic marriages, including those in registry office, started in 1845 and a civil certificate does not list religion of bride and groom.
If it was a marriage in a Catholic church that is also unlikely to do so either. There is at least 1 online database which records, incorrectly, the religion of both parties as that of the church they were married in.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Yes, the information came from an online database. I was expecting them to be Presbyterians, so the marriage in the Registry office makes sense. The other marriage reference does say "Saintfield Catholic", so either this is a mistake or perhaps one of them was Cathlolic.
I will try to check out the source further.

Thanks for your help.
