4tlh Cinque Ports Artillery Volunteer Corps
« on: Monday 21 January 13 22:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My g g g grandad Henry Thomas Mortimer born Nottingham 1812 died in 1879. His death was recorded in Leicester. It was not a very common name- though his son born 1848 also carried it and his son too.

I found this: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/24557/pages/1770/page.pdf and on the page is
               VOLUNTEERS.
4th Cinque Ports Artillery Volunteer Corps.
Sub-Lieutenant Henry Thomas Mortimer to be
Lieutenant. Dated 25th April, 1877.

It may not have anything to do with either my g g g granddad or g g granddad but can anyone tell me about the 4th Cinque Ports Artillery Volunteer Corps or try and find out who this Henry Thomas Mortimer was?

I'd really appreciate any help,

Ryan :)

Hi Ryan

I don't believe they are the same man. If you go back to the LG and search for artillery mortimer in the top search box and cinque ports in the second box, and then sort by date, you get an entry for 1880 saying that he has resigned his commission.

Volunteers attended weekly so he would have needed to reside in the place the unit was based.

Thanks I've had a look on familysearch and there was a Henry T Mortimer in 1881 living in Kent and married to a woman from Egypt.
Thanks
