Hi can anyone help?

Ihave an ancestor who was a licenced victualler at the shipaground pub in bermondsey in 1861. I cant make out the road name although it is near Edward street. In 1851 he is a deputy corn meter in canal row. My query is...was this area in Jacobs island area of Bermondsey? If so then Charles Dickens wrote about the ship aground which is very exciting. Because I dont know the area well I dont want to jump to conclusions.

Also - would it havebeen usual to change occupations like he did? Until I get up to the archives I can't check his victuallers records.

Try to give us as much information as you have. Name of person, wife, children, birth places, etc. That will help to identify him.

Hi. John thomas Broughton, he was born in Horsleydown in 1814 and had a daughter Elizabeth in 1846. Living in canal row 1851 and 1841 and as a licenced victualler in 1861 in the ship aground Bermondsey. Thanks.

The address is 34 Edward Street - "Ship Aground Public House" is what's written on the census page.

Publicans changing jobs, or maybe having day and evening jobs is not uncommon. I have one round here who's a hatter on one census and publican on the next, and another who also ran a butcher's a few shops down the road.
