State Records NSW - Colonial Secretary Index 1788-1825
« on: Wednesday 23 January 13 06:53 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if someone can shed some light on an entry I've found which could be of interest to me

*1811 Jan 29 Letter to, instructing delivery of investment of Richard Atkins to John Laurie (Reel 6002; 4/3490D p.94

Judge-Advocate Richard Atkins features in my family as he employed my 8 x grandmother Ann Bockerah as a housekeeper after she became a widower when her convict Jewish Husband died in Sydney in 1791 [Solomon Bockerah] It is said that Richard and Ann had a daughter Penelope Atkins born 13 Feb 1793. Ann died a few days later from the child birth.. Richard erected an monument at St John's cemetery in Parramatta in her honor. Ann [Australian Womens Weekly April 1976] and Solomon had a daughter Sarah Bockerah whom married John Laurie in 24 Apr 1810 at Lane Cove. Hence my interest in the above entry/letter dated 1811
Look forward to hearing from you
Thanks for your help
Cheers

The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser (NSW : 1803 - 1842)

is the newspaper / gazette at the time

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/title/3     which is pretty much held by the Mitchell Library in Sydney,   as with the microfilm collection listing u have found....  a snail mail to the librarian may result in an lookup or expansion of that object......

in saying that rootschat chatterer abcsydney who can be found in the chat room is familiar to that library and may , if asked go in and look that up.....

I do suggest a general index hunt within the trove site if you havent already cos an article may appear.

as for the cemetery >   (and google St Johns Cemetery cos there is often loose stuff floating)

Parramatta: St John's Cemetery

the lane cove librarian also may be worth a contact >

Lane Cove Library eResources

Looking on the National Australian Archives site,  as well as the National Library of Australia site may be worthy .....

other than that I cannot be of any assistance

 :)

I have also located this entry on a google search under the name Bockerah and wonder does some body out there have " Michael Flynn book"? as apprently in his book "The Second Fleet' devotes nearly a page to Ann and Solomon Bockerah. I would very much like to no what was mentioned

Cheers

The National Archives of Australia won't have any official/government records from that time - they would all be either in State Records NSW or the State Library of NSW.  Some might be at the NLA but it would mainly be personal records you'd find there.

The Colonial Secretary's papers are held at State Records which has a copy service available for a reasonable fee: http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/indexes-online/indexes-online#c

Many thanks again Cup of life for that interesting account of Solomon and Ann Bockerah on Michael Flynn's book 'The Second Fleet'. by chance would John Laurie be mentioned whom arrived Sydney town on the 'Fortune' in 1806?
Cheers

Hi Murray,
Index page for John LAWRENCE/John LAWRIE refer back to page 163 John LAURIE husband of Sarah in the book: The Second Fleet: Britain's Grim Convict Armada of 1790 by Michael Flynn.

These may be of interest.
Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine June 2012 page 42, has an article and Photo of John LAURIE. (The link below takes a little time to load before displaying page 42)
