Fairhall Sussex Search (Beckley or ??)
« on: Wednesday 23 January 13 23:58 GMT (UK) »
We are trying to confirm the family of Thomas and Mary (Britton) Fairhall.  They apparently married in Beckley on 16 March 1827, but where is the evidence?  Was it a non-conformist marriage or is this quoted unreferenced date incorrect?
The Baptism query is the names and dates of their children, who are not confirmed:
    Frederick John 1827?
William Henry (??) 2 Nov 1829  or was he named as Henry William?  Why another William in 1837?
    Mary 1833
    William 1837
    Maria 1838
Are these correct?  Can anyone help with these children, please?  Any other sons or daughters?

The William Henry/Henry William is important, because it would appear he started a whole Fairhall family in Canada, emigrating after the 1851 Census and arriving in Ontario in time to be counted again in their 1852 Census.  His name is the only small question, but we'd like to get details for the other children, too.
All help gratefully appreciated.

Hello bwfairhall

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Non Conformist marriages were Illegal before Civil Registration which started the 3rd q in 1837.

From the Sussex Marriage Index

A Thomas Fairhall married Mary BUTTON 15 Mar 1827 at Beckley. It states Mary was from Ewhurst,
East Sussex.

Baptisms

Frederick,21 Oct 1827.At the time Dad was a Farmer

Mary Ann,12 Mar 1832
Thomas,8 Jun 1834

Welcome
The 1841 shows the family living at Whatcombe?  Beckley
Thomas 35 Farmer
Mary 35
Frederick 13
William 11
Mary 8
William 5
Maria 3
Frances Paine FS

All born in county except Mary.
Remember that ages above 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 in 1841 and it does not show relationships.  There are other Fairhall families living nearby so they may be worth looking at.

Thank you Omega and Sillgen
Your speedy reply is much appreciated!
Obviously the researcher who was checking Beckley registers didn't twig on the different surname or something - easy enough to do I guess!
I'll note your information and follow it up with my Canadian Fairhalls.
Bruce

Thanks, Omega
My study is a One Name Fairhall/Fairall, and I'd love to track down as much info about this family as I can: they are the furthest back we can go for a Canadian Fairhall family (hundreds) and the members of that family struck a dead end (they said), so if I can have some success I can share it and please a few people!
Any info would be VERY welcome.
