Newspapers & Funeral Directors/ Crematoria
« on: Friday 25 January 13 00:22 GMT (UK) »
I am seeking some general information please......

I am interested firstly to know what newspapers circulated around Hampshire/ Dorset
circa 1990 so I can attempt to find a funeral notice/ obituary to do with one of my kin; and to their possible whereabouts in archives or libraries so i may endeavour to contact those resources.

Secondly I am interested in a list of funeral directors / crematoria in Hampshire for the period 1989 to 1991. So i can methodically contact each one of those that have survived until the current day to find information on the particular kin I seek.

Any material provided on this topic is much appreciated,  and will be put to good use.

thanks rootschatters for your ongoing support in my quest.

Hi

Your best bet would be to get a copy of the death certificate as that would/should have the usual residence of the deceased and the date of death. This would hopefully narrow down when and where to start looking. There are a number of cities and towns in the area such as Southampton, Portsmouth and Bournemouth, and some councils charge a fee to search their records.

the death certificate does not tell me one iota about his funeral arrangements or burial plot.

But it does tell you where he lived and when he died. Hampshire and Dorset have a combined poulation of some 2 million people, dozens of cemeteries and many newspapers.

i think what i was after was someone who had a link to a site that listed the newspapers,  and a list of the funeral directorates  which to me seems to be somewhat of what we do in family history to collect our data

no matter i shall keep googling in the hope that i find the major newspapers that obituaries/funeral notices  maybe listed.

sometimes i get stuck for ideas and sources in trying to find MY family just like everyone else......

Hi

This is the link to the National Association of Funeral Directors website. Scroll down and just enter the county. It looks like there are 93 in Hampshire and 55 in Dorset. There may well be others who are not members of the Association, and of course they may have used a Funeral Director from outside the County depending upon where he lived.

http://www.nafd.org.uk/funeral-advice/funeral-arrangements/choose-a-funeral-director.aspx

From my experience newspapers are generally not online for the early 1990s and would need to be searched manually. As well as a number of daily papers there would be quite a few weekly papers and free papers. These papers would be spread over a number of Archives or Libraries. Certainly when I have visited my cousin in Hampshire she has had several papers and they only cover a small part of the County

If your relative lived and and had their death registered in the same registration district, that may narrow down the number of possible cemeteries/crematoria you would need to approach to locate a final resting place.

www.yell.com should help you in this regard.

With many years experience of the funeral trade, I would not hold out too much hope that they still have the records you seek from 1989/1990. If records survive, they will only contain information about the particulars of the funeral - date and place, fees etc, but if you have contacted the cemeteries/crematoria you might already have located the correct place and be succesful in that regard.
