"Jumped Ship" Sydney 1884-Robert COTTER
« on: Friday 25 January 13 14:50 GMT (UK) »
Have been searching for my great Uncle "forever". Just came across a mention of a Robert Cotter detained for deserting Ship Miranda at Sydney 3/1/1884. Could anyone tell me what might have happened to him at this time i.e would he remain in Australia or be deported.
I have obtained His service record from Kew & it is without any doubt my great Uncle.
Would appreciate any leads or advice on how to progress from the 1884 date to track him down. Thank you

To ensure we have correct person.. We should have parents names, any middle names, marital status, year of birth, any siblings. His occupation.
Deported? We were at that time under Brittish Law and any passports required were Brittish. Returned home more likely if he was in Her Maj Serv to face any charges possibly.

We should be able to find him then,MAYBE? :o

This is probably what ballydw already has.

NSW Police Gazette 9 Jan 1884

Deserter's from her Majesty's Service.
From HMS Mirandi
On 3rd Jan 1884
Robert Cotter, AB born in Cork , 23 years of age, 5 ft 7 in fresh complexion grey eyes brown hair

Now it does say Mirandi but beneath that there is a deserter from the Miranda on 6th Jan so  thinking one of these is a typo?

There is a reward of 3 pound for apprehension within 2 years (plus another 5 pounds from Colonial government)

regards,
   Ros

adding : when it appeared in other states police gazettes, he had deserted from the Miranda

Robert Cotter b. 1861 Middleton Co Cork Ireland. No middle name. Parents names Father Maurice Cotter, Mother Elizabeth Gear , Geary, Guiry (Surname spelt differently on Baptism records, no Civil record as wasnt introduced in Ireland until 1864. Siblings Mary b. 1857, Ellen 1859, Edmond 1863, Ann Maria (died at birth) 1871. Single. Dont know Occupation, but his father was a Shoemaker.  Not sure if I am allowed to post his Service Record here.
Thanks also to Ros for her quote - yes this is the record I found.
Also saw a mention of a Robbery of a cheque from a Robert Cotter in NSW in 1907 from the Police Gazette. place called MULLALEY NSW.  Thanks again

This is the only one I can see that is a possible in either Qld or NSW.
ROBERT COTTER AGED 6O YRS QUIRINDI, REF Num  5923/1918.

Mullaley has been in the news lately it is very close to one of the largest bushfires in NSW History. It is S/W of the Warranbungle Ranges which are nearly burnt out and still burning.

Quirindi is S/W of Mullaley. The age shown is close and if given by an uninformed informant then is very close. The givaway is no parents shown.

Hi Neil, I have this Death Reg Transcription from several years ago. Have no way of knowing if it was my Robert as there is no information on it regarding place of birth/parents etc. This Robert died in Quirindi District Hospital Municipality NSW and was buried in Church of England Cemetery Quirindi.
Regarding my Robert seemingly all the Ships he served on were UK based apart from 2. He enlisted in 1879 so I thought I might have found him on a Census but no joy. Do you think there is any point in posting in the Forces Board? Regards :)
