Postscript:

Bedfordshire Archives have the descriptions of prisoners [from the Gaol log book] and then there were photos taken in last half of 19th C.  E mail the archivist for these.

However, persons tried at the Assizes will have their trial records kept at the National Archives - not in Bedford  :-[

As suggested by Cathy, yesterday I emailed the archivist at archive@bedscc.gov.uk for info on a Partridge I found recorded on this Gaol database, & got a good reply today, with info of him & other Partridges from North Beds. In the reply she said 'We have a new database with over 18000 entries now available in the searchroom (I hope to make it available online in full, soon) .'

John,

An interesting piece of info is that some 21st C inhabitants of Bedford Gaol are helping to put all this info on-line in order to gain their vocational computer qualifications whilst they do 'their time'!

It is an interesting idea - certainly a 'win-win' situation for everyone?  :)

Just a gentle warning that the E2BN database has a slight fault with it.  If no info is available for certain fields & the database was expecting a number, then by default it enters a zero.

This affects dob, height & number of children and, in my case, this is confusing the issue.  My potential chap was recorded with zero children, which meant he was not mine.  I checked with E2BN & they admit that by default zeros are entered when no info is really there.  So my potential chap was not actually recorded as having zero children, but either wasn't asked the question or declined to answer or the answer was not recorded.

Hope that makes sense, basically don't dismiss a potential match because of zero this or that on the E2BN site.  Perhaps the simplest solution is to use the link provided by johnP http://apps.bedfordshire.gov.uk/grd/ which appears to be fine, although I do not know how both sites compare against each other for content.  I only came across this link after my problem with E2BN & now I compare any potential matchs on both sites.  Regards, TonyR.

  How wonderful,

found my Barcocks on two sites, what a bad lad my gt grandfather was,  but....

better still a description of him.  They seemed to be a rough family or very bored young men in a tiny village; Stagsden.

When he joined the Army he said he was from Ireland, now I know why,

Thank you so much
