Isaac Johnson South Hetton
« on: Sunday 27 January 13 12:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi can any one help with this gent please, I am helping my friend with her family and he is her Gt Grandfather who on the 1881 census is shown as a school master aged 47 yrs with his wife Elizabeth and family in High Coniscliffe, in 1871 he is shown age 34 yrs living with his wife Elizabeth and daughter at Great Lumley, they are both teachers. In both the census he claims his birthplace as Hetton and South Hetton, my problem is that I cant trace him further back through census or birth records,  I appreciate the ages do not match on these census but you would think that something would be obvious from earlier census. It did cross my mind that he may have gone abroad and that is why he is missing from earlier census, and I did find a chap of the same name leaving Liverpool for New York on the ship "Webster" but none for him returning in the time frame and sadly it does not give the areas the passenger was from.
Can any one enlighten which district, parish, county would his claimed birthplace have come under for the birth years shown, any help would really be appreciated cheers L.B

Hi

You have posted on the Northumberland board but isn't Hetton in Durham - not Northumberland?

Carole is correct- South Hetton was in County Durham.

Specifically: in the Parish of Easington St Mary* until 1838 and thereafter a parish in its own right (Holy Trinity)

I've asked the moderator to move it to the Durham board for you

Do you have a copy of his marriage cert showing his fathers name and occupation?

Durham Records Online has the Easington St Mary baptisms from 1798 to 1951. No results on Isaac Johnson from that source.

As Carole has said - you need to know his father's name.

Thank you all so much for your very prompt replies and in correcting my mistake in thinking the area was Northumberland. I am flying blind with this one as these details are only gleaned from census and the free details as you have said from his marriage to Elizabeth Campbell, the family has been checked back from what we know from his grandson's marriage. So I will try the suggestions you have made i.e the two Parishes. No, we dont have a copy of his marriage cert, as I am doing this for my friend I am trying to do as much from records as I can without  incurring too many costs for her, probably the wrong way. If it was for myself I would not hesitate. Thanks for all your interest, It will be interesting to see where this goes as the rest of her family have been quite easy from records, but Isaac is a mystery man cheers l.b

In 1891 I notice that Elizabeth is a widow living with her family in the same building as a Henry Johnson aged 70 born Stonegrave, Yorkshire. Henry has a son aged 38 who was born in South Hetton in 1853.

Looks like the elder 'Henry' may possibly be a relation of Isaac Johnson.

Hi Mim, thanks for your input and info. I had realised from records that Isaac had passed away in Sept quarter of 1889, and I had a note to myself to check out Elizabeth on the 1891 census. Before she married Isaac she is shown as a 19 yr old on the 1861 at 2 Colliery Yard,Sunny Brow, Crook with her mother Isabella Campbell and family. I will go to the library (subs run out on) and check your info out as the chance is that if Henry Johnson is in the picture this may be how she met Isaac. As he was a teacher he must have moved around a lot. Thanks once again l.b
