James Anderson/Mary Digner
« on: Tuesday 29 January 13 00:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks I hope someone can help.

my great grandfather John Anderson was born in 1870 in Limerick,Ireland he married Elizabeth Quaid from Adare,Limerick in 1894 in Limerick City.

His parents were James Anderson and Mary Digner.

If he was born 1870 I am guessing his parents married sometime before this, has anyone heard of the name Digner in Limerick, that was the name given by my grandfather on his mothers Scottish death certificate and he signed it so I doubt it was wrong as it was also on my great grandfathers death certificate again signed by my grandfather.

Any help would be appreciated.

Scott Anderson.

Variations in spelling is not uncommon at this period.

All in Co. Limerick-
John born 9 Aug.1865 Clarina dist. (page 419 in civil register)- parents James Anderson & Mary Dignor
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F554-9JF

Thomas born 2 May 1868 Clarina dist. (page 527 in civil register)- parents James Anderson & Mary Degnan
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FPYR-XXC

Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages began in 1864 (from 1845 for non-Catholic marriages) so there could be older children and the extracted LDS births only go up to c1881 and are not complete so there could be younger ones as well. For earlier dates you need to see if church records for that period exist.

thanks a lot aghadowey,

i see that if this was indeed my great grandfather he appears five years older, as on his irish marriage certificate he shows at 24 at date of marriage and is 62 on his scottish death certificate.

my grandmother on her scottish death certificate appears ten years younger.

I think this is them due to unusual name and i think the name thomas, this appears on my grandads certificate as a middle name when he was born in ireland, so maybe this was after his uncle, also his brother james i have found out was given a middle name gerald, so i will check out to see if john and thomas had another brother gerald.

thanks a lot for all your help,

scott

It wasn't uncommon to give a new baby the name of a deceased sibling, especially if it was a family names such as grandfather's, etc/ so there's a chance it is the same parents but an older child. Church records would help to confirm the details.

On the plus side, it looks as though there's only 1 other John Anderson birth (1864-1875 in Limerick registration district)- but he belongs to a different couple:
John Cormack Anderson 1866 Limerick volume 20 page 427

yeah i saw that before, i reckon you have hit it bang on the head.

that pretty much confirms everything for me on that side through extensive research which as you know is time consuming, I am going to move onto my great grandmothers side now.

She was Elizabeth Quaid in Adare, Limerick in 1870 to Patrick Quaid (Blacksmith) and Elizabeth Bickie (name on death certificate) although I think this should be Hickey.

I am going to try and get over to Limerick this year to research.

I really interesting story on how all the Anderson's moved over to Glasgow, Scotland after the 1901 Ireland Census when they stayed at Wellesley Place, Limerick Urban No 4

Sadly my grandfathers brother James (Jimmy) Anderson born 1900 in Limerick was murdered in Tradeston,Glasgow in 1926 two years after his marriage and three months after his son was born. He was stabbed in the neck by a member of one of the notorious Glasgow razor gangs which were borne out of nothing more than secterianism which has blighted my city for many many years.

The really interesting thing though is health, I look at a picture of my grandfather John Thomas Anderson born 1896 in Limerick in 1927 when he was 31 and at six foot (i am 6"6) he was a bear of a man, which for the time the size of him and the build was quite unusual, see picture of him attached.

Thanks so much for all of your help.

Hello Scott Anderson,

I  believe we might be related.  My records show that John Anderson was my grandfather.  Have you taken a DNA test?  I did and all of my family history that I   have so far in on MyHeritage.com.  I  have so much information to share with you.
Please reach out if interested.  I am new to this site and not sure how to send a PM.

Best,
Allison ~
