Peter Marshall, Merchant ??

Hi all,
I have a Peter Marshall b abt 1809,married Jane Gibson in Greenock in 1847,he is listed as a merchant...but of what  :-\ does anyone know where I could find out?

Have you found Peter and Jane on censuses, their children's births etc.?

Where a particular commodity is not mentioned, it is likely that he was a general merchant. If his occupation on the birth certificates of his children (or their marriage/death certificates) or his own or his wife's death certificates is no more specific than "merchant", then you might find more from the valuation rolls or a local trades directory/post office directory.

Given the previous ref: Marshalls of Camelon mainly listed as Travellers and Hawkers, I think Graham's definiton is likely to be very accurate, that of general merchant.

I would think that Peter Marshall was just that, and traded goods of a general nature rather than a specific merchant (of a product or service).
