Joseph Cook
« on: Thursday 31 January 13 10:07 GMT (UK) »
Joseph Cook was born 1807 in Cambridge he apparently married Elizabeth Bradford on 11 May 1829 at St Mary's Cambridge and a daughter Elizabeth was baptised 30 May 1830 in Cambridge (Family Search) No Church given,
I have found Joseph in 1851 in Cambridge with wife Elizabeth and a grand daughter Elizabeth Cook aged 1
I know what happened to the Elizabeth born 1830 but cannot trace any of the family in 1841 or any other census any help appreciated. There is a Joseph who died in Cambridge in 1852 if so Elizabeth may be the Elizabeth May in 1861 living with a daughter Louisa Cook b about 1838
but if so where has Louisa been.

If you use the LDS library catalogue  https://familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlc/library_fhlc_main.asp

Select film/fiche search and put in the film number from Elizabeths christening (1818378)

it will tell you that film covers Bishops transcripts for St Botolph's Cambridge   ;D

The GRO index shows Jupiter John May [what a wonderful name!] marrying in Cambridge in 1853 with Elizabeth Cook on the same page. He doesn't appear with Elizabeth in 1861 or 1871, although she says she is married.

In 1851 a 13 year old girl named Louisa Leader is shown as a visitor to the Cook family. She was born in Stamford, Lincolnshire, and there is a birth of Louisa Leader in Stamford district shown on the GRO index for 1837.  I can't see her in 1841.

Louisa Cook, daughter of Elizabeth May in 1861 is 23, but her birthplace is named as Barnham, Kent.  (There doesn't seem to be a place called Barnham in Kent, but there is a Barham near Canterbury).

In 1871 33 year old Louisa is still with Elizabeth May, but now married to Joseph McCormick (marriage in Cambridge district 1869) - and her birthplace is Stamford, Lincolnshire.

Thank you Rosie for the way to find the church from the LDS catalogue something else I have learnt, also from the Camdex entry this confirms that this is the correct Elizabeth.
Thank you Galium I tracked Elizabeth from FreeBMD marriage checking for Elizabeth under both surnames. I am at a loss to explain the change from Louisa Leader to Louisa Cook unless this was some form of adoption.
