If you try this link you will get a good deal of info about Wandsworth workhouse and infirmary.

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Wandsworth/#Records

You will see, at the end of the info, that many of the records are on Ancestry as well as at London Met Archives.

Re your earlier question about the meaning of "in tutors service".  This may refer to her having been a college servant at Oxford.  I think servants would be employed by the college, but individuals would mainly work for the same person while they were in college.

What an interesting answer! That is one thing I've never been able to pinpoint - did she work for him in Oxford or Queens Street?  The Will does not make that clear - it does mention an "Andrew Martin" "if in Tutor's service" as well... but only the two of them have this note beside their names.

Possible sighting of John in 1881 in cavalry barracks in Leeds? (Birthplace "St Mary London" could possibly be Richmond - parish church is St Mary Magdalene). RG11/4524/136/14.

Consistent with the horsey theme at least :)

This might have possibilities - I will look into it.

Quite often, when a servent was left money in the will of their employer, the will stipulated that the servant should only get the bequest if they were still working for the employer when the employer died ie "if (still) in tutor's service".  Was Richard Berens referred to as "a tutor" in the will? After all, several years could elapse between the will being written and the writer dying, and many servants may come and go in that time.

If you have the will, perhaps you could have a look to see when it was written - if it was many years before 1849, then "Workhouse Jane" would have certainly been too young at that point to be left a bequest for her "care and attention towards him"

The Will was written March 9, 1849 and he died June 13th, 1849.  I agree, I'm also thinking that 'Workhouse Jane' can't be her as I don't think a 13 year old could give the  'care and attention' to receive 50 pounds and a brand new 3 volume set of Bibles!
