1849 Will of Richard Berens, Esquire
« on: Friday 01 February 13 23:02 GMT (UK) »
I have a copy of the Will of Richard Berens, Esquire - Bursar/Fellow All Souls College Oxford.  Among the list of servants that are recipients is my g-g grandmother.  Only she and one other gentleman have a note beside their names that says "if in 'Tutor's' Service".  What would this mean?  Was she a student/servant? Does 'Tutor' refer to something specific?
There are also some 'hieroglyphics' in the 'Consanguinity' column beside each name.  The one by hers almost looks like a scrawled 'F' and a capital 'E' without the top bar on it.  Would anyone know the meaning of this 'code'?  I've never been able to figure out from this Will if she 'worked' at his Queen Street, Mayfair home, or perhaps Oxford home...   Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I'll post a link to your other thread as there's significant overlap:

I've had a look at Richard Berens' will as recorded in the National Archives and I must say I can't see any reference to being "in Tutor's service". The condition seems to be that Jane was still living in his (the testator's) service at the time of his death.  Perhaps the version you're looking at says Testator, or an abbreviation thereof?

I actually have the written 'ledger' copy as well when the funds were given out.  This is where the note is written.

Are you sure it doesn't say "T'tor" for Testator?
