Family Announcements in Newspapers - 1900 to Now
« on: Sunday 03 February 13 02:23 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,
I have access to Irish Newspaper Archives, and have found some deaths, marriages, and coroners reports for my Catholic relations in Cavan and Meath. Great.
But why can I not find any of the Protestant family members in Co. Down? Even with the exact date of death (in the last 20 years) nothing comes up.
Am I looking in the wrong newspapers, or do the Protestants not advertise deaths and funerals?
Thank You
Jean in New Zealand

Hi Jean,
You may be looking at the wrong newspaper or the family may not have put a notice in the paper. However many protestant families do put a notice in a local paper and often put an "in memorium" notice for the anniversary for some years afterwards.

People did, and still do, put notices in the local newspapers which tend to be the ones they read. Do you have a particular area in County Down in mind?

Just to give you an few example-
Down Recorder (est.1836)- http://www.thedownrecorder.co.uk/

And don't rule out the Belfast papers- Belfast Telegraph, Newsletter, etc.

However, most will not be available online except for the most recent announcements.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you Kingskerswell and Aghadowey,

The Down Recorder is by subscription, but I was lucky with the Belfast Telegraph.
