P C Central Crime Unit Virus
« on: Tuesday 05 February 13 13:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Anyone had the PC Central Crime Unit Virus -  Scary !!!!! when it first pops up.

Was on my computer, happily browsing and all of sudden my computer locked and there was a screen saying it was the PCEU - apparently some messages say you have to pay £100 to get the computer unlocked. They can gain access thru the back door as Trojan software attaching themselves to themselves to links and downloads from trusted sites.
Managed to get the screen unlocked eventually by control, alt and delete.  Log off - log back on again and then getting rid of as many of the error report screens as possible before the screen locks up again.  Keep going through this process and eventually it appears to have "freed".
BUT is there still a "Hidden virus" somewhere ?????

Scam has been running a while by the sound of it

Hi Sandra,

Viruses dont remove themselves by and large, so it may still be lurking.
That it has been around for a while implies that your security software
is not up to date. I would suggest that you check the update status of
your PCs operating system, firewall, and virus scanner, plus all your
browser add-ons, then run a full system scan. If you network other
devices in your household, they should be checked in the same way.

Oops - just noticed it is on the Technical board.

Some info here:

Looks like you need an anti-spyware program?

Thanks, we have anti-virus and security packages etc, (inc spyware) which is why this is a mystery. There are loads of sites along the same lines as the one you link to. There are recommendations to remove malware using a variety of free downloads.  However, there are other sites who do not advise using free downloads i.e Combofix has a file in it which apparently carries a separate virus called Sality !!!!!!!!!!!
Another simple solution is to restore the computer to a date and time before being infected with Police E-Crime ransomware Virus.  ;)

That's why I said anti-spyware and not anti-virus! ;D

I used Spyware Doctor when I had a similar problem, some years ago.

I had this too last year and downloaded a special tool to get rid of it. Luckily I had created an "admin" log-in and a "user" log-in so I was able to get in through admin to download the tool. In the end, after hours of cleaning with the tool, Microsoft Security Essentials (my protection) suddenly started whirring all by itself and got rid of it from the hard disk a couple of days after it appeared. But I did have to re-start the pc several times to get rid of everything. The tool I downloaded and burnt to a cd is no longer valid because this nasty changes all the time. A simple google search should guide you.
