Peter Ferguson ( R.N. d.1921 )of 31 Hunters Road, Spital Tongues, Newcastle.
« on: Thursday 07 February 13 16:32 GMT (UK) »
I am researching Peter Ferguson who may be an ancestor of mine. He was born in Newcastle in about 1892/3 and served in the Royal Navy during the First World War. One of the ships he served on was "HMS Weymouth". He is believed to have been on this vessel when it was involved in and damaged in the Battle of Durazzo ( Adriatic ) in 1918. He may have sustained injuries then. It's known that he died in the Royal Naval Hospital in Chatham in July 1921.He is buried in St. Andrews Cemetery in Newcastle. His parents were called Peter and Maria who lived at 31 Hunters Road.I should be grateful to hear from anyone who is able to provide any further information about him at all such as names of siblings, etc. I'm not sure whether he married or not.

Thanks,

Pirhana.

Dear Pirhana,

The 1901 Census lists a property at 46, Morpeth Street, St. Andrew with the following occupants:-

Peter (41) Cabinet Maker (Born in Edinburgh) Maria (42 Born in Edinburgh) / Frederic (16) Pit Lad / Florence (12) / Jane (9) / Peter (7) / Mable (5) / Mary (3) / Jessie (1).

In the 1911 Census the family were at 31 Hunters Road, both parents and five daughters, plus a son William (born in 1904). Frederic and Peter (the son!) were not listed.

Cannot be certain whether Peter (son) married but I carried out a search of the marriage records for Northumberland between the years 1910 to 1921 and came across the following entry :
1916, Tynemouth Registration District, Peter H. Ferguson married Thomasine L. Hastie.
This might be "your" Peter.

Regards,

Fifthwheel.

Hi, Fifthwheel,

Many thanks for the census information. It's very useful, particularly regarding the siblings.
