« on: Tuesday 12 February 13 04:36 GMT (UK) »
I have a connundrum- My 5 X  great grandparents Ralph Plant b 1770 c Staffordshire  and Lydia Malkin b 1770 c Staffordshire. May be the same 5 X great grandparents as my husbands.
Is anyone able to just help me on this predicament'
Ralph and Lydia above had a son Ralph Plant b 1795 marr 1815 Staffordshire to Hannah Simpson b1791 Staffordshire ? this is my tree.
Ralph and Lydia also had a daughter Thirza Plant b 1790 Staffordshire  who marr 1811c in Bucknall to  William Cooke b 1797 c  Staffordshire this is my husbands tree.
Now my question is are these people linked ( the same) !!!!
Please help if you can. Thanks  Glenys in Queensland

Glenys, this request may get a better response on the Staffordshire board. A moderator may move it for you if they think it would be a good idea.  :)

It certainly looks like there is a connection. Whereabouts in Staffordshire did your Plants and Malkins live, marry and die?

I think you just approach this in the same way that you approach any other families, and trace them carefully step by step. I would check the original parish records if I were you. I'm not sure what is available online for this area in this time, so you may need to order the appropriate films to your local LDS Family History Centre. Of course someone here on Roostchat may have access to these records, so see what other advice you get. I am just wondering if PRs give abode and occupation at this time in Staffordshire.

It may also depend on how many families with the same names are living in the area. If yours is the only one, then it points to there being a connection, however if there were many families by the same names, it may just be coincidence and there may be two Robert and Lydias christening children around the same time. Fairly unusual names I would guess, so you are probably looking at a related family.

What sources have you have checked to get the information you already have?

It's OK, I just found the marriage of Ralph Plant and Lydia Malkin, 8 Apr 1776, St Peter Ad Vincula, Stoke upon Trent. (so now I know what area we are talking about)  :)

Think there is an earlier Lydia chr 11 Nov 1777 (with a note to say that the year may be incorrect and should be 1778) - also the following baptisms, same place, same parent's names:

John 12 Jan 1777
Jemima 20 Sept 1778
Sarah 16 Jan 1780

The family you sent are my side as Ralph Plant b 1795 was married to  Hannah Simpson.
As you can see there is a sibbling Thirza Plant b 1790 who i was trying to find if she was the person married to William Cooke. Do you have any way checking that  marriage  ( 1811 Bucknall )to see if the parents names appear on the marriage details as I dont have the facilites at close hand to get thoes details. Glenys

Just rechecking and if the 1776 marriage is correct then your estimate of year of birth for Ralph and Lydia is incorrect, or the marriage is for another Ralph and Lydia.

Where did you get their years of birth of 1770 from?

No fathers named on the 1811 marriage:

Bucknall cum Bagnall
5 Aug 1811
William Cooke - Bachelor
Thirza Plant - Spinster
Groom Parish: Stoke
Bride parish: Stoke
Wit: Thos Sparkes, Saml Allen

It is the only marriage for a Thirza Plant which shows up on Freereg.

Presuming that the 1776 marriage is correct and presuming that Ralph was in his early 20s when he married, and considering where he christened his own children, this might be worth further investigation:
St John the Baptist, Burslem
Ralph Plant
bapt 28 Jul 1754
father James
mother Hannah
