From www.freereg.org.uk Nicholas and Mary's childrens baptisms South Shields St Hilda

Elizabeth born 28 Oct 1808 bap 23 Nov 1808 parents Nicholas Gray, shipwright native of Swalwell and Mary Coe native of Fellon (Felling) Shore Gateshead - 1st daughter

Jane bap 6 Nov 1811 parents Nicholas Gray shipwright, native of Whickham and Mary Coe native of Gateshead, 2nd daughter

George bap 6 Jan 1813 parents Nicholas Gray shipwright and Mary, living in South Shields

Grace bap 27 Oct 1816 parents Nicholas Gray shipwright and Mary, living in South Shields

So I would say from that Nicholas could have been baptised at Whickham (which covers Swalwell) and Mary in Gateshead, from http://familysearch.org  there is this baptism for Nicholas but it's a bit earlier than 1780

Nicholas bap 15 Dec 1772 parents Robert Grey & Grace, Whickham - although the mother's name could possibly be a clue

Nothing on familysearch in Gateshead for Mary although there is a baptism in Ryton Oct 1774 father William. Bit early again though.

Whickham, Gateshead and Ryton have Bishops Transcripts on familysearch so they would be a good starting point to check these 2 baptisms (and later ones) and see what clues there are - if any.

It's quite possible, I have various ancestors who had children for many many years, there may be other options for Mary of course, Ryton isn't far from Gateshead but those 2 childrens baptisms which say she was from Gateshead might well mean Ryton isn't the right one. So unfortunately a good trawl through baptisms for her in Gateshead using the Bishops Transcripts first might be an idea. There doesn't seem to be many online transcriptions for Gateshead for the time frame you are looking at.

Good luck with your research, with your ancestors living so close to the Northumberland border I can well imagine them jumping back & forth as mine seem to have done - not an easy job.

From memory I think there may have been 3 families with father Nicholas, with various wives i.e Mary, Eleanor, Ruth all baptising their children in Gateshead / South Shields etc so it looks like quite a difficult family to follow. Your Mary Coe may well have been born after 1774 (1774 would make her 31 on marriage, not impossible but often they would be much younger) so it's well worth checking the Bishops Transcripts - enjoy

Hi Wilrob, just found your enquiry from 3 years ago as I am researching the Dobson family. My Great Great Uncle was Jeremiah Dobson who married Mary Ann Grey. He was born in 1822 in South Shields and died there in 1909, I have no details at all for Mary Ann. They had 5 children, Nicholas b. 1850, William b.1855, John G b.1857, Mary Ann b. 1860 & Thomas b.1863.
Don't know if that information is of any interest to you.
