Jarvis Family - Slaugham
« on: Tuesday 12 February 13 13:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi on the 1851 census for Aldgate, London, I have my Jarvis family, It says that Henry was born in Slaugham around 1814.  I would like confirmation of a Henry in Slaugham and his parents and siblings if possible.

Jane, thanks could not get onto their site to view it.  How would I get parents occupations and place of residence at the time, as Slaugham was the church it could have been a small village near there such as Pease Pottage.  I know Henry was a horsekeeper in 1840 at the time of his marriage and would like to know if he followed his fathers proffession or not.  I know slaugham is very rural as I camped near there in the scouts many many years ago, i now live 300 miles away from there.
They say things and proffessions from the past generations have a affect on you as you grow up, for 14 years i rode horses and suppose could have made a living out of it, but that was in my past.

It's only a transcription Paul.  To see the actual entry you would either have to go to West Sussex RO at Chichester or if you can get to an LDS centre near you, you could order & view the film.  Sussex OPC doesn't have anyone covering Slaugham but there might be something of interest there for you  http://www.sussex-opc.org/index.php?cy=52&n=Slaugham&b=index.php&t=Parish&k=460&l=102+

Henry's marriage certificate might give his father's profession & the church record might say where they resided at the time of his baptism.

I agree with what you say about professions, hobbies & talents being linked through the generations.  You only have to watch WDYTYA to see this happening!  My own grandfather was in the RFA during WWI looking after the horses that pulled the guns & I often wonder if my past passion for horses & riding came from that root :-\

I also found that marriage Omega.  There are an incredible number of children attributed to this couple between Worth & Slaugham so I'm just sorting through them.
Found this on the West Sussex data base.  It looks to be your man, Paul.

I had Philadelphia Bailey, but could not find out where I got her from, so was starting again from my 2x ggfather and working back again.  I have these children of William:
James Jarvis 1800 –
Sophia Jarvis 1803 – 1874
Mary Jarvis 1805 –
Mark Jarvis 1807 –
Thomas Jarvis 1810 – 1825
Henry Jarvis 1813 – 1875
John Jarvis 1819 –
Ann Jarvis 1821 –
Walter Jarvis 1828 – 1909
Eliza Jarvis Bailey 1842 –
not sure where the 1842 one comes in, thought it might be one of the girls children that they were bringing up as their own.

Found this just now on Family search: William Jarvis

England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

       spousePhiladelphia Bailey
    child Eliza Jarvis Bailey

Now i have William's baptism in Rye 1773, son of John Jarvis and Susanna Kettle marriage in Salehurst 1772, Omega gave me this on another post.

So from Salehurst to Rye - Rye to Worth - Worth to Slaugham  - Slaugham - London.  I can see the easy move from Slaugham area to London as it is on the London to Brighton Road, but why the move from Salehurst to Rye and Rye to Worth.  It might make some sense if I knew the occupations.

Jane I have looked at that, Woodhatch Surrey... Would that be where he was from ?

Paul

Hi Paul,
It must have been your tree I saw on Ancestry as this information coresponds with it?
I don't think Eliza is a child of William & Philadelphia.  It could be that William married a second time to yet another Philadelphia, this time Bailey?  But the whole Eliza thing seems odd as her last name is Bailey not Jarvis unless the names have been turned around :-\
I think it's worth keeping that Surrey information on the back burner.  Worth & Slaugham are right on the Surrey border so could have some significance,
