Saltburn by the Sea 1920s theatre
« on: Tuesday 12 February 13 20:32 GMT (UK) »
Cissie Lindsay and Jack Clare were entertainers in the 1920s. She died at Saltburn in Jan. 1928.

In "The Stage" magazine I found him advertising for work, giving his current address as Cat Nab Pavilion, Saltburn. Would that have been the building that stands at the entrance to the pier now?

Where might there be theatre posters/programmes from that era?

Although I have never heard the phrase "Cat Nab Pavillion", it is more likely to be the Assembly Rooms, which became the Spa ( and in my youth Philmore's ), which was on Saltburn Bank (Saltburn Road).

As far as I remember, before Philmore's it was called the Spa Pavilion, but may have been Cat Nab Pavilion. It certainly had a theatre, as the local AmDrams, the 53 Society, used it when I was a child in the 1960s . I think it is now the Spa Hotel.

Of course, Cat Nab is over the beck in Old Saltburn, near the Ship Inn, but may have lent it's name to a building in the (relatively) new Saltburn.

I have some old postcards from Saltburn, my home town, I'll dig them out and see if any mention the Pavillion

Hope this helps

Alisdair,

Thank you. I've had a look online for the Assembly Rooms, and that does seem a likely venue.
Cissie's death cert. simply says she died at Cat Nab, Old Saltburn; an announcement in "The Stage" says "At the Caravan Fair Ground, Saltburn".  (There's no comma after caravan, but maybe there should be.) Can you shed any light on where that would have been?  Old postcards online show swing boats etc. that look to me as if they are roughly where the carpark is now at the foot of Saltburn Bank.

The fairground, as I remember it, was just over the beck, heading towards the Ship Inn. There were swing boats along the prom by the pier as well.

I think I'd go with the Spa Pavilion building on Saltburn Bank as well. Unless there was another building before my time.

Yes, the fairground was at the base of Cat Nab, over the beck and near the Ship Inn. It was a fair that operated from before Easter to about October (in my time at least). Later it was owned by one man, whose name escapes me, but before WW2 there were a few itinerant fairground operators , but many of the Fairground folk stayed there all year, and did odd jobs and things in Saltburn and around.

Like you, I would think there should be a comma between The Caravan and The Fairground.

I have cards of the fairground and Cat Nab, with one showing the Spa in the distance, I'll put photos up tomorrow.

As an aside, much of my early courting was spent at the "shuggy boats" at the fairground, an early girlfriend had a holiday job there and I used to get free rides!

And my under-age drinking was done in The Ship. Happy days....

Don't think any of my old postcards of Saltburn are of any use in this case but I will double check just in case I'm wrong. :)

I'd just like to say that I think that Saltburn is the most wonderful place.  We visit each year in August for the Folk Festival.  Long may it continue  ;D  And please don't change Saltburn too much!

Not the Spa, I'm afraid, but the wonderful pier and tramway!!
