General baptism history help needed please!
« on: Sunday 24 February 13 09:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could think of a plausible reason why a really large family would have all the baptisms for the children at once? I have my family of Thomas' in Llangynwyd where David Married Caroline in 1835 and I believe this was second marriage as there appears to be one child (Margery) born in 1835 who I am guessing was his first wife's Daughter and maybe she died in Childbirth or similar and also at least 2 boys, David and Thomas ( born 7 & 2 years prior to the marriage). All of the children of David and Caroline apart from the ones much later were baptised in 1848 in Llangynwyd at the same time, which seems a bit odd unless it was a trend of the time?

I can't seem to find a plausible marriage, death or baptisms for the earlier part of the family yet but is it at all possible that they didn't marry until later?

New vicar doing the rounds and chasing up parents with unbaptised children. Or entry to school needed baptism.

I've got a family where all the kids are baptised together aged from about 12 downwards and it seems to have happened when they moved back to the parish where their mother was born. Her father was the parish clerk, so I can imagine a conversation along the lines of, "Yes, you can come and live with us but only if you get the children baptised". When they were born, then names of the children had been put on the roll of a Baptist Church.

I've got a similar situation with one of my families.  The only reason I discovered there were children of a second marriage was that I approached a church for details of the marriage and was informed there were five children who had all been baptised some 10 years after their parents wedding.

If you look near the end of the web page I've pasted a link to, it seems there was a 21 mile round journey on awful country lanes to one of the churches in Llangynwyd and I'm presuming this was the situation in many places.

Thankyou! So it wasn't unusual then for families to have them baptised together at a later date then?
And yes "baiden" is mentioned with the farm name on some of the census' details so possibly a 21 mile treck.

My David Thomas is about 13 years older than his 2nd wife which I thought slightly unusual but not out of the ordinary until I discovered that baptisms for 3 of the children were nowhere to be found but I could find some similar in the right area with the right fathers name but another mother. I just need a marriage now to confirm it, or a burial  :-X

Hi there,

Think that your David was married to a Ann John who died in 1835 aged 35/or37
She had three children with David, and they were Thomas, David and Margery b 1835
Could presume she died at or after the child Margerys birth.  Poor thing.
Someone has David married to Ann on 4th February 1820 at Llangwydd.
You ask why David didnt get all the children baptised separately? |I think it could
have been also the fact he was a busy lad as on the 1851 census he is the
Farmer of 211 acres of land and has men working for him.  That was a 7 days
a week job.    He might have had a day off laugh.
I presume you know Caroline was nee Rees.

Hope this helps

Thats them and yes he was very busy I would imagine. David would be my grt grt etc etc Grandfather and I hit a brick wall with these when I was on here a few years ago ( Badgirl). I have been looking at maps trying to figure out where else they could have been baptised as none of the first 3 children have baptisms in the area although I found 1 baptism in Bridgend for a Margery in 1835 with parents David and Ann so maybe that is her! My Grandfather has mentioned the surname John before in relation to being distant relatives so maybe that's the connection :D

Thanks for the help its very much appreciated as I have been trawling sites and records all day and have got nowhere fast! ;D
