Jones, Fagan, Hart
« on: Monday 25 February 13 17:46 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for information on Thomas Jones (b. 1842 - possibly Meath).  His mother was Mary Fagan (b. 1821).  His siblings were Michael, Margaret, Anna, and Mary.  After his father died, his mother married Owen Hart.  All came to the US in the 1860's and settled in Cleveland, OH.

The family is Roman Catholic.  Possibly from Enfield, Meath.  We have heard Thomas's father's name to be either Patrick Jones or Michael Jones.

Thank you for any help!

To search for early records before the start of civil registration you usually require a more detailed location e.g. the name of the town, townland or parish, and also the denomination of these families. see :

   Introduction to Irish Records
My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?

p.s. I think there may be a typo in your dates. Mother born 1861, son born 1842...

There is a listing on Griffith's valuation for an Owen Hart in Corballis townland near Rathmolyon. He is shown as leasing a house & garden from a John Webb. This record is dated 1854.

See : Hart surname, Co. Meath, Griffith's Valuation

Thank you for your replies.  I will check into the Hart entry in Griffiths.  I did modify my post to correct the birth date and to add some names.

Our biggest problem in this research has been determining the town.  Some family history says Meath, Enfield (Meath), or Dublin - even "19 miles NW of Dublin".  There is one reference to Cork from someone who signed a death certificate.

Enfield is the latest and most specific info we have from a descendent of Michael Jones.

We know Thomas Francis Jones arrived in New York in 1860 at age 18.  He brought his mother, Mary Fagan Jones Hart, sister Mary Jones, and step-father Owen Hart (wtih sons Patrick, James, Bryan, and John) to the US in 1865.  All sailed from Liverpool.

I guess I'm hoping by linking some combination of Jones, Fagan, and Hart in the same locale, it will narrow down the town and ultimately lead to the parish.  I know this is a long shot.  It is quite different than the research I have done here in the US.

Thanks again for your help!

19 miles (~30km)  north-west of Dublin City would be somewhere around Dunshaughlin or maybe Ashbourne, Co. Meath.

Enfield is a little further away at about 27 miles and almost due west.
