Army HI
« on: Tuesday 26 February 13 04:57 GMT (UK) »
I have an ancestor who was an engineering apprentice in the 1841 census,  HO107/143/13/23/37. This is in the Phillack region of Cornwall.

The name of the apprentice is Henry Huthnance, and the name of the head, is John Huthnance.

Henry appears to be staying with John, a relative, whose occupation is “Army HI”, as far as I can read.

Could any one give me an idea what “Army HI” could be. Could it have something to do with Henry’s apprenticeship, or is it just that he is staying with John?

It says Army HP - ie an officer on half-pay.

In the 1850 Army List John Huthnance was commissioned in the Royal Artillery Drivers on 12 November 1813. He was placed on half pay on 1 November 1814.

Apprentices were banned by law from joining the army so there is no connection between the two occupations.

Thank you very much for that prompt reply.

I had no idea about John Huthnance, as he is not in the direct line. I will have to do some more research and find out just where he fits into the Huthnance family
