Goodness John.

sorry for being so dense

I was not thinking that you were dense.

Good to see it was the correct family though.

Good idea to look at surrounding census records, and guess what, there are 9 sheets in front of my ancestor Frederick, and they are all connected to the big house, including the Knightleys themselves, so I think it very likely as speculated that Boundhill or Roundhill was on the estate.

Hi John ...

Being local to Fawsley, I have large scale (2.1/2" to the mile) Ordnance Survey maps of the area - both a modern one and one prepared from pre-1939 surveys.

Unfortunately, I can't see a "Boundhill" on either of them.  The nearest is Bullshill Spinney and farm to the east of Badby Woods, just the other side of the Newnham/Preston Capes road, and Barehill Farm just to the west of Badby itself (and west of the Daventry/Banbury Road, now the A361).

Can you post the details of the 1911 census entry, so that I can try and have a look at neighbouring records - and is the family in Fawsley on the 1901 census?

Blimey.

I just found this saying Roundhill was a hovel near Preston Capes.

So it was near the Manor House.

Sorry, that was my attempt at humour, didn't for a minute think you were casting doubt on my relative levels of denseness :-)

Goodness John.

Ah, just found the Preston Capes website, and their search throws up

http://www.prestoncapes.org.uk/history/genealogy/search/?forenames=&surname=ware&Submit=Search&q=1&id=5435

Think I'll drop them a line and see if Boundhill or Roundhill means anything to them.

Hi all, and thanks for the kind help. I think we're close to solving this, though... just out of interest, I see there's also a Round Hill at Weedon Bec, which is about 6 miles from Fawsley.

And an interesting piece about it toward the bottom of this page.

Hello,

I have a great grandfather in our tree, on the 1911 census, in which he states his place of residence as The Cottage, Boundhill, Fawsley, Nr Daventry.

I can't seem to find any place named Boundhill. His writing is very nice and clear, so his spelling of the placename seems pretty certain.

I'd love to try and find out if "the cottage" is still out there.

Hope someone can help.

Regards

John

Manor Farm (at the north end of Preston Capes High Street - now "The Manor") was damaged during this practice bombing, so it would seem possible that a hovel was also damaged.  Manor Farm is on the south side of the castle mound - could this be Roundhill?

My only problem with the above is the actual address written by Frederick - he put Fawsley, not Preston Capes - and whilst the two places are lumped together for census purposes they are a good one-and-a-half miles apart geographically.  Not sure why he would have put Fawsley if he was, in fact, resident in Preston Capes.

I have circulated this query to a few members of our informal local history group in the village to see if anyone can throw any light on the subject.

Just had a word with one of my neighbours today.  He says that the previous occupants of "The Manor" (when it was Manor Farm) and who had lived there for around forty years have confirmed that Rounhill was just to the east of the farm.

However, it still worries me that he gave his address as Fawsley and not Preston Capes!
