Miles Platting Marriage

Hello

I have someone who was married in Miles Platting in 1886 but lived in Leigh (about 14miles away) and don't have any reason to believe they ever lived in Miles Platting except for the reason of the wedding banns.  He married his late wife's sister shortly after her death.  They were both Catholics.  Does anyone have any knowledge of this happening regularly in Miles Platting?  We have plenty of churches in Leigh so I don't know why they would go so far away.

Perhaps they married elsewhere as I believe marrying your dead wife's sister was not allowed until the early 1900's.

Really, I didn't know that.  In fact they did get married again in our local Catholic church and had a dispensation 4 months later.
