Fobbing - Parish Marriages & Census Help Please
« on: Wednesday 27 February 13 23:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

My Laver family is causing me a real headache & heres hoping that someone can help with at least this part of it!

My 4x gt grandmother Elizabeth Simpson/Porter/Laver/Staff (yes, she did marry & bury 3 husband's!!) was born abt 1795-1801 i believe in Fobbing, ages seem to vary on records!

She married William Porter (as Simpson) on 5th June 1824 in Fobbing. William was buried 6th Jan 1828. She next married my 4x gt grandfather Joseph Laver on 11th Oct 1840 in Fobbing. Joseph died 6th Sept 1842 in Corringham. She married for 3rd & final time in 1st Qtr 1853 to John Staff, probably in Fobbing as well. (she appears never to have left the village!) Elizabeth died in 1874 in fobbing.

Could sks look up Elizabeth's 3 marriages for me please?

Also i have not been able to locate Elizabeth (Laver as she would be at this time) on the 1851 census, despite many hours & days etc of looking!. Could someone see if they can see her please?

I have Elizabeth in both 1861 & 71.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Hi David,

I can't find the marriages but I found Elizabeth (b1801) & Joseph (b1806) in 1841. if you have access to Ancestry they are transcribed as Louer! Living with them is Robt Louer (b1806), Willm Porter (b1826) & Mary Larus (b1833). Good luck with guessing that version of Laver!

Cheers, Jo  :)

Considering the Mary 1833 above: was Joseph married previously? Is there any chance that Joseph & Elizabeth were married earlier than 1840? It seems a long time between her 1st & 2nd marriage?

Hi Louisa Maud,

Many thanks for that, that's certainly her in 1871. In 1861 she's a servant in the local Public House in Fobbing! Ref: RG9/1074/115/8 & 9. It's over 2 pages. A Samuel Wade is Victualler & Barge (Owner?)

It's only 1851 that i'm missing for Elizabeth now & 1861 for husband no3 John Staff. The odd thing is that although Elizabeth is married in 1861 she isn't living with husband John & he seems to have completely disappeared! Also she's shown as a widow in 1871 & as yet i have been unable to find a death record for John Staff!

Many thanks again.

Kind regards

David

I wonder why Elizabeth married at St Mary's Corringham if it is shown they were both from Fobbing, these 2 churches, St Michael's Fobbing and St Mary's Corringham  are next door to each other and share a priest in charge now, it wasn't till about 7 years ago that this was so, up until then I believe they had their own parish priest, did she live in Corringham for awhile, hence the marriage at St Mary's

If you google "White Lion Fobbing" it shows you what the pub looks like now, probably nothing like it was in Elizabeth's time

Louisa Maud

Elizabeth and her previous husbands are most probably buried in St Michael's Fobbing

1851
I have put just "Elizabeth " born 1800 plus or minus 5 years on census check, born Fobbing and  only 1 comes up on
H0107/1773 FOLIO 287 PAGE 23
Living in Lion Terrace aged 50, widow, inn keeper and barge owner, the name looks like BOGUE , strange she seems to have disappeared, can't find John Staff on 1851 either,do you know where he was born ?
