Middlesbrough Steelworks
« on: Saturday 02 March 13 01:13 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know which steel works company had business ties to India and South Africa in the early 1920's?
I have found my great grandfather, Charles William Jones, working as a heater, on a ship to India leaving from Liverpool, with an address in Middlesbrough in 1923. He later ended up in South Africa.

I'd like to find out who he was working for and why he was sent to India and South Africa.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Dorman Long had the major steelworks in Middlesbrough. They built iron bridges which were shipped to many parts of the world, including the Sidney Harbour Bridge.

Hi Ian,
Thanks of the reply.
Would the Teeside Archives be the right place to find employment records for Dorman Long in the 20's?

Hi,

I don't know if they would hold Dorman Long records but they are very helpful at the Archives. Part of my family come from Middlesbrough and I have received help from the Archives on a few occasions.

It's worth a try.
