Looking up church registers
« on: Saturday 02 March 13 03:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi there, I live in Australia, and am doing research on my husband's family who originated in the Calne, Cherhill area. We are visiting the UK in September, and I was wondering is it possible for the lay person to look up church registers for BM &D?
Cheers Kristin

I think your best plan would be to visit the Wiltshire and Swindon Archives at Chippenham?

Hi Kristen, in addition to church records the Archives hold other information such as old newspapers, court records etc and you have access to original material.   In addition a lot of the records have been transcribed and are in easy to read books.   I would suggest that before you visit the Archives you give them a call and reserve the use of a fiche reader or computer for the time you intend to visit to avoid disappointment.
