Medical Officer of Health - Leeds
« on: Tuesday 05 March 13 15:28 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find information on a great uncle, James Sharpe, whom I believe was a deputy medical officer of health in Leeds.  I have no exact dates but would be in the 1940-50's.  Any ideas on where I might find this information?

Thanks

If he's an MoH, he's a doctor. Have a look in the Medical Registers on Ancestry; they'll give you his qualifications and therefore where he studied; you can also follow his career.

There is a James Sharpe at 173 Langsett Road, Sheffield in the 1947 Register; qualified in Scotland 1925; LRCP, LRCS Edinburgh 1925; further qualification in Glasgow.

Might be a start?

Same address 1955.

Thanks Graham.  That's him.  He was a fellow of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons.  Also was vice president of Medico-Chirurgical Society. He was also deputy medical Supt.of the county hospital, Motherwell, and deputy medical officer of health for the burgh of Motherwell and Wishaw.

I got some info from the medical registers regarding him and his cousin William Sharpe.

You have been a great help, thanks again.

Glad to have been of assistance! The two Universities' alumni offices or archives may well have info on him. And now you've identified his whereabouts, you may well find local papers helpful.
