What Armed Forces was WILLIAM HENRY JAMIESON in? please help

Hi their can you help my ggrandad was in the forces (soldier) in 1850's don't know the date or where he was born but was married to a mary mcpherson on 23rd june in pasiley 1858.they had a son(my grandad) who was born in leith scotland but on my grandad's wedding cert william snr and mother are deceased???
so what was he in so i can find some info on him??. many thanks for reading this .

Ok, so he's listed as a soldier in 1858 then?
Key is going to be to find his regiment. First thing to do is widen out from that date, so 1851/61 censuses, childrens birth certificates etc.  What do they say? Sometimes you'll be lucky and find they give more detail than just "soldier".

He's listed as deceased by what year? So work back and see if you can find a death that matches.

Where and when was he born? Might get lucky and find service papers for him based on that alone.
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

For what? Births/marriages/deaths/census returns - pretty much any genealogy site will have those, they're bread and butter records.

Hi Kevin

When were they in Leith (month as well as year if you have it)? Also, did they have any other children. There were no men with his full name in the army in 1861 - from a listing on Findmypast -but nine men without the middle name.

So a first step is to discover if he was still serving in 1861. Do you have his date/place of birth?

Thanks Ken,For looking at my post all i can tell you is my grandad was born in leith in1888 he dad was married to mary mcpherson in paisley 1858,i've his wedding cert but no place of birth.sorry not a lot to go on ???

If he was born 1888 are you sure his father married in 1858?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
