Philip Thomas Grisdale RAF Spitfire Pilot
« on: Wednesday 06 March 13 22:33 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the parents of Philip Thomas Grisdale who was killed in WW2 flying a Spitfire. He was born in 1917 in Wandsworth and his mother was a Grover, but try as I might I can't find his parents names. Any ideas gratefully received.

I'm stating the obvious here, but . . . . the birth certificate will have his parent's names! ;D

I can see that his mother's maiden name was Glover, but I would assume that she had been married before, and that therefore the marriage to Mr Grisdale wasn't to a Miss Glover?

He married Averil Bush in Wandsworth in 1938.

Also I know I could order the birth certificate but I can't afford that for everyone I'm looking for.

Why was his mother married before?

Stephen

Because if her maiden name was Glover then we should be able to see a marriage for Grisdale-Glover on FreeBMD.

Philip & John's father may have been Charles Philip Grisdale, who died in Tooting Bec on 20 Jan 1957 aged 80.  Administration granted that year to John Grover Grisdale sales executive and Averil Simpson married woman. Effects £779 9s 4d.

Averil seems to be Philip's widow who had remarried to a William E Simpson in Mar qtr 1947.

Yes he was a twin and his brother's name John Grover Grisdale is evidence to me that his mother was indeed a Grover and her father might even have been a John Grover. I've sent a message to his son in California but had no reply so far.

I can't find a Grisdale/Grover marriage and that's my problem.

avm, you're a genius thank you, that's him. Now I can trace him back to the 1600s in Matterdale. See:http://grisdalefamily.wordpress.com/
