William SCANDRETT
« on: Monday 06 June 05 13:02 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I'm looking for a William Scandrett, a tailor, who married Elizabeth Jackson in Pembridge, had 4 children there, and died and was buried there in 1841. However, he does not seem to have been born in Pembridge. Does anyone have a William Scandrett born elsewhere c 1800, who didn't marry or die in his place of birth?
Additionally, the above Elizabeth Jackson gave her parish in the marriage register as being St John, Antigua. She was a widow, but did not marry previously in Pembridge. If anyone has anyideas as to where I could look next, I'd be most grateful.

My Scandretts originated from Dilwyn and Leominster. No Williams that I'm aware of - James is the dominant name in my line.

Saying that, there is a birth for a William Scandrett in Dilwyn 2 August 1801 - parents James and Elizabeth so there could be a connection ???

Do you know if this William stayed in Dilwyn or moved away? I have found a couple of William Scandrett births in Herefordshire around the right time (one I know was in Kington), but I haven't been able to find out yet if they stayed put, or if they could have moved to Pembridge. I think I'll have to make time to go back to Hereford Record Office...

Looking at the 1851 Census Index for Hef, he's not in Dilwyn. The only William Scandret of the right age is William SCANDRETT age 52 living in Monkland. Next oldest is 32 living in Huntington.

Yeah, my William died just after the 1841 census, I might have to check Dilwyn in 1841 too. Thanks for looking.

Checking in Hereford RO, it looks like the William Scandrett from Dilwyn could be mine... although I could do with some proof. I discovered that William apparently had a sister called Sarah who'd witnessed his marriage in 1825 and who his son Charles was living with in 1851 (she'd married George Anderson in 1835), and according to her census returns she was born in Dilwyn; but James and Elizabeth in Dilwyn don't seem to have had a daughter called Sarah (and there is no Sarah Scandrett of the right age anywhere on the IGI). She would have been born approx 1797-1799. If anyone knows of a Sarah Scandrett of that period, with a brother William born c1800... I'm desperate!

I've just noticed your post.
I too, have a Hereford William Scandrett in my FT;  mine was born 1765 probably around Canon Pyon (children christened there)   He married Susanna Harris and had sons William, born 1792, twins Thomas and Rebecca born 1797 and my direct line ancestor Susanna born 1789.  My Scandretts were sometimes written Scandred.   Let me know if one of these rings any bells.

Hmmm - just received the death certificate for my James Scandrett (died 31 Jan 1840 at Crowle Vicarage in Claines, Worcestershire) and discovered that he was far older than I thought - born c 1784.

I suspect he was born in Herefordshire so if anyone comes across a likely candidate whilst researching Hef baptisms - please give me a shout :)
