Have you searched online civil registration index for James' death? should be listed if he died in Ireland.

p.s. FamilySearch has done some recent changes, so sometimes links dont work. If not just go to the BMD Index on FamilySearch and enter the following fields and select search :

First Name / Last Name : James / McCann or M'Cann
Dont enter a birth place, but put year of birth between 1872 and 1880
Dont enter a place of death, just enter the years 1901 and 1911

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=NZT19071205.2.46.2

This says he drowned on 14 Oct 1907. It would be worth looking at other newspapers. Normally, you get reports of funerals for priests.
