Gertrude Connolly
« on: Thursday 14 March 13 21:51 GMT (UK) »
 :) Hello Everyone,

I'm hoping someone out there will be able to help me with a mystery in my family tree. I'm hoping to find out some things about my great Grandmother. I'm mostly hoping someone can point me to a birth record for her, or a marriage record. Any other information would be wonderful!

I know for certain.

1. She went by the first name Gertrude and came from Ireland.

2. According to her children's birth records, her maiden name was Connolly.

3. She had a relationship with my Great Grandfather, Robert Edmund Wheldale, born April 1905 in Hull, died March 1987 in Hull.

4. She had four children with my Great Grandfather. They are
Winifred  (who was born in Ireland)
Robert E  (1929 in Hull)
a boy(1936 in Hull)
a girl (1942 in Hull)

5. At some point in the 1930s, her mother came to live with her in Hull and died there.

I surmise but don't know for certain/have been told by family members.

1. She was probably illegitimate.

2. I am told her father was either a German man or an Italian man (not massively helpful)

3. She probably married Robert Edmund Wheldale in Ireland.

4. According to her death record she was born 12 July 1902. However I was told by a family member she was born 23 June 1901 in Newcastle in Ireland. Another record suggests she may have been born in Galway.

5. She is supposed to have had a sister called Ruby.

6. There was a legal battle over a farm. Gertrude or her mother had to sell the farm to pay the legal fees (I presume this means they won the case or it wouldn't have been theirs to sell).

I don't know

1. What her mother was called.

I have not been able to get any further then this and it's driving me mad. I can't even request a birth or marriage certificate for her to confirm any details because I wouldn't know where to start.

Thank you for reading.

;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*

Hi Ilona and welcome to Rootschat.

You will notice that your post has been edited in accordance with RootsChat policy of not publishing details of living people here, or details of people who may still be living. This is to protect all concerned from spam, identity abuse, internet abuse, etc, etc.

It is very difficult as you have already found, trying to find any clues with the limited information you have.  Do you have a year of birth for Winifred?  There is no obvious birth listed for her in Ireland.

heywood

Does no-one in the family know the name of her mother or an approximate year of death?

1911 Irish census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Dundrum/Ballylough/236205/ has a Gertrude aged 10 yrs with a mother Harriet Jane, 38 yrs. She is single.
There is a death in Hull for a Harriet J Connolly, 74 yrs in 1940 in Hull.

Have you looked at these?

Whoops sorry!!! Open mouth and insert foot. :-[
I really should have thought better of what I was doing. Thank you for editing it for me.

Regarding your most recent post. I had not managed to find those records. It sounds like a really good fit though doesn't it!!!

No one knows the name of Gertrude's mother, or when she may have been born I'm afraid.

Thank you so so much for your help. I will look into what you have given me. This could be the breakthrough I needed.

If that is her, then this is the likely birth:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FBKM-ZWL

and this would be Harriet Jane https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F554-BXX

Harriet is with Gracey aunts in 1901 and she and Gertrude are with one of the aunts.
