Flight Lieutenant Donald Grisdale of Pollokshields, Glasgow
« on: Friday 15 March 13 19:37 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I dont have access to Scottish records so maybe someone could help?

Donald Grisdale was born in Pollockshields, Glasgow in 1919 to William Walter Grisdale and Sarah Grisdale. The family had come from Liverpool a few years earlier. Donalds wife was Susan Brown Kippen. Donald became a Lancaster pilot with RAF 542 Squadron and died in action on Feb 14, 1945.

Can anyone find details of his birth, marriage etc? Also had he other Glasgow born siblings? When did his parents die?

Stephen

PS sorry for the lack of apostrophes but I am on a French computer and cant find how to get them.

Hi Stephen ,

This looks like the marriage -
Donald Grisdale / Susan Brown K Johnstone 1944 Pollock Lanark

You wont be able to view the marriage online as it is too recent.

Can't see a birth in Scotland for a Donald Grisdale.
Freebmd has Donald Grisdale birth 2nd quarter 1918 Birkenhead , mother's maiden name Corless.

William Walter Grisdale / Sarah Corless marriage 3rd quarter 1900 Toxteth Park ?

Thanks Ev

So he got married just before his death!

I found the other things you did just after I posted my request. Thanks for all.

His father died in 1941 from bombing of Liverpool while he was an air raid warden it seems!

I don't know when the family went to Glasgow now. When he died in 1945 the burial data gave Pollokshields as the address of his parents, but his father was dead by then.

Stephen

Stephen, not sure if Donald's parents remained in Scotland after the period you may have them there for...can't easily see a Scottish death for them so far.

Do you have a death for his father in Liverpool? As here www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/3101126/GRISDALE,%20WILLIAM%20WALTER

He father died in 1941 from bombing of Liverpool while he was an air raid warden it seems!

Donald's wife I think died in 1976:

Grisdale Susan Brown Kip/Johnstone 55, Eastwood and Mearns in East Renfrewshire ref. 650/00 014

Looks like Susan, Donald's wife may have remarried after his death to a x Johnstone.

This death cert is outside of the period you can view full image online and would need to be ordered in a paper form.

From this index www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/1798941/GRISDALE,%20DONALD - the address given I would think is that of his next of kin, his wife, Susan.
