H.G. Wells in Kent
« on: Monday 06 June 05 20:57 BST (UK) »
Any H.G. Wells fans out there?  He rented from the executors of one of my family Beach Cottage in Sandgate, Kent for one year in 1898.  He depicted this building on the seafront in one of his “picshuas” with the sea breaking over the roof.  That drawing is reproduced in one of his biographical volumes and I am trying to find a copy of this sketch.   Anyone possess a book in which it is reproduced??

Hi Richard,

The Sandgate dwelling most associated with H G Wells is Spade House which is in Radnor Cliff Crescent and a bit too high for breaking waves although near enough for sea views.

The house is now a residential home for the elderly I believe.

You may have seen this already: http://www.thisisfolkestone.co.uk/hgwells.htm  it mentions Beach Cottage which was in Granville Parade.

Next time I am along there I'll try and take a picture - if it's still there.   I don't have any old pictures unfortunately but you may be lucky and find an old postcard on eBay if you persevere.

Cheers, Steph.

Hello Steph,
That would be kind!  Beach Cottage is now called Granville Cottage in G. Parade.  I have not found any postcards anywhere in which the house is identified but have located a print on the Web of Sandgate in the 1800's viewed from Folkestone which shows a number of seafront houses distantly beyond the castle but without the means to identify any one in particular.
yrs.,
Richard

Hi Richard

The Heritage Room at Folkestone Library should be able to sort you out with this request:
