Insightful headstone inscriptions (revised title)
« on: Sunday 17 March 13 21:58 GMT (UK) »
On my 5xg grandmother's headstone, which I've been fortunate enough to find, is the lovely inscription:

"She was an affectionate wife and a tender parent"

I was delighted to be given this small insight  as to the personality of my ancestor, who was born around 1752 and died in 1839.  It's so nice to find something other than just dates; just finding a headstone is a cause for celebration in my tree, and to have this little snippet too is such a welcome bonus!

It made me wonder what revealing inscriptions other people might have found on their ancestors' headstones?

At Minstead churchyard [New Forest, Hampshire] a block in the headstone was removed. It apparently said "beloved" husband but legend has it the widow had the word removed when evidence came forward that the deceased had had a relationship elsewhere.

No comments on personality but I have one that says "Her end was peace" which I think is nice.  :)

Hi Roobarb and Cemetery Friends!  Well, I thought there might have been more than this. Perhaps inscriptions like the one I have found are quite rare - that makes it an even better find!

No contributions from me I'm afraid Whipby.

Don't despair - you only posted a few days ago and the weekends aren't too busy on Rootschat.
Maybe your title isn't catching the attention of those who may wish to contribute to this thread, maybe you could alter it to include the words "headstone inscriptions" perhaps.  :) Just a thought.  :)

By the way, you are lucky to have such an inscription. It really does give great insight as you say.

Insightful Headstone Inscription
« Reply #5 on: Sunday 24 March 13 16:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi Ruskie

Thanks for that - unfortunately I don't seem to be able to alter my post heading, now.  I think "they've" taken away that facility once more than a day has elapsed, if I remember rightly.  Maybe shorter  ???

Never mind!  Thanks for the suggestion.   I've altered the heading on this post but it won't show at the top.
