Town Sergeants Deal

 Has anyone done any research on Town Sergeants?

 I have found Jonathan Capon on 1861 census with that as his occupation as I was looking at
 Middleton family history.
 I know the role they have nowadays, i.e the one in Sandwich but can't seem to find anything on
 line about the role in Victorian times.
