Jane Skuse - 1851/61 look up please
« on: Tuesday 07 June 05 10:22 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Would someone please do a look up for Jane Skuse in the1851 & 61 census, believed to be living in the Thornbury area of Gloucestershire.

I have a birth certificate for her daughter Laurina who was born in 1866 in the Thornbury Union Workhouse, no fathers name shown.

I have found a possible birth registration for Jane in 1848, and a possible marriage to John Smith in 1874, after the birth of her daughter, but these have not been confirmed.

I would really appreciate any help you can offer.

Many thanks

Nashua

There is a Jane Skuse on the 1861 census, part of a family
Eliza Skuse abt 1819  Winterbourne, Gloucestershire, England Wife  Winterbourne  Gloucestershire
Ellen Skuse abt 1854  Winterbourne, Gloucestershire, England Daughter  Winterbourne  Gloucestershire
George Skuse abt 1804  Winterbourne, Gloucestershire, England Head  Winterbourne  Gloucestershire
George Skuse abt 1840  Winterbourne, Gloucestershire, England Son  Winterbourne  Gloucestershire
Henry Skuse abt 1860  Winterbourne, Gloucestershire, England Son  Winterbourne  Gloucestershire

John Skuse abt 1838  Winterbourne, Gloucestershire, England Son  Winterbourne  Gloucestershire

Thanks for you help Gillj.

Not sure if this is the right one as the possible marriage I found showed the father as Thomas.

Winterbourne is not too far from Thornbury but I dont think this area would fall in the Thornbury registration district.

Still I will keep it as a possibility as the marriage may not be the right one.

Thanks again

Hi Nashua,

This may be her in 1861 (Tytherington comes under Thornbury district) but I'm struggling to find her in 1851, as she may be indexed under her parent's name.

Tytherington Gloucestershire 1861
RG9/1748 168 8
Bernice Cornock 5 Yate, Gloucestershire, Daughter
Celia Cornock 29 Cromhall, Gloucestershire, Wife
Christopher K Cornock 2 Tytherington, Gloucestershire, Son
Edmund P Cornock 1 Tytherington, Gloucestershire, Son
Richard W Cornock 4  Tytherington, Gloucestershire, Son
William Cornock 30 Tytherington, Gloucestershire, Head
Jane Skuse 12 Tytherington, Gloucestershire, Servant

Hi Nashua,

Couldn't work out where Tytherington was in 1851  :-[ but found it at last!

Itchington, Gloucestershire 1851
Includes Tytherington
HO 107/1957

SCUSE Thomas 29 Ag Lab Malmesbury
Caroline 27
Mary 8 Scholar Tytherington
William 6 Tytherington
Amelia 5 Tytherington
Jane 2 Tytherington
Thomas 2m Tytherington
Simon Lodger 22 Ag Lab Malmesbury

This Jane seems to fit with the one in 1861.

Debbie  ;)

Hi Debbie,

Thanks so much for your help. Seems like this is the right family, and the marriage I found in Thornbury for Jane Skuse and John Smith seems to fit as her father was shown as Thomas. The marriage took place after the birth of her daughter Laurina in the workhouse ( Laurina is my g grandmother.), but strangely Laurina names her father as Charles Alsop on her marriage cert. Maybe Charles is her biological father but not named on the birth cert.

Arranroots - thanks for the links, they will be very usefull as a lot of my family on both sides come from this area.

Rootschat is amazing - everyone is so helpful.

regards

Nashua,

This site http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/births.htm#COL4

explains why Laurina's father could not be named on her birth certificate.

I have an example in my tree where an illegitimate child has named their father on a marriage certificate - it was not illegal to do so although if a father was named they should be the natural father - not always the case in practice though.

I also have at least one case when the father seems to be a figment of the bride's imagination. It is a pretty tricky area but at least you have clue.  ;)

Debbie  :)
