Thank you Christine :-)
Jeremiah has led me a merry dance. He was born in Leith and for a long time it appeared that he had dropped off the edge of the earth sometime after the 1901 census was taken.
This marriage is really the last piece in the puzzle for Jeremiah. I spent a long time looking for it , in Scotland (where he was born and grew up), in Philadelphia (where he emigrated to) and in Delaware (where he died). I had hoped his death cert from Delaware (he died in 1912) would at least give me his wife's forename, but no, she is down on that as Mrs Jeremiah NICOLSON.
and after all that, I find that he married in Byker ! Its definitely the right record, age, occupation father's details all match and Andrew was his brother (who I knew lived in Newcastle for a short time around then)
The other witness Gideon - you did read it correctly it is PITLOH, well done you! The GRO index has his birth and death registered with the correct name, but have his marriage as PITLOCH.
As for census returns, the transcriptions of his surname on those are weird and wonderful, despite the scans being fairly clear.
He was Jane Victoria's brother in law so that gives me a bit more detail too.
So, yes, thank you ! Its 'very' useful :-)
