Hi Boo

It's freezing and it's windy but other than that no weather to brave - I will be at Woodhorn tomorrow so will see what I can find

Hi Boo

Marriage details –

26 Dec. 1904 by banns

Jeremiah Nicolson aged 28, bachelor, Stonemason of 33 Mowbray Street.  Father John Nicolson, seaman
Jane Victoria Poulton aged 23, spinster of 94 Mowbray Street.  Father Thomas Poulton, joiner.
Witnesses Gideon Pitloh (debateable surname, the t was not crossed but did not look like the l next to it so that’s my best guess!) and Andrew Nicolson

The vicar had originally written Nicholson for both groom and his father but it had been corrected.

Hope this is useful

Christine

Thank you Christine :-)

Jeremiah has led me a merry dance. He was born in Leith and for a long time it appeared that he had dropped off the edge of the earth sometime after the 1901 census was taken.

This marriage is really the last piece in the puzzle for Jeremiah. I spent a long time looking for it , in Scotland (where he was born and grew up), in Philadelphia (where he emigrated to) and in Delaware (where he died). I had hoped his death cert from Delaware (he died in 1912) would at least give me his wife's forename, but no, she is down on that as Mrs Jeremiah NICOLSON.

and after all that, I find that he married in Byker ! Its definitely the right record, age, occupation father's details all match and Andrew was his brother (who I knew lived in Newcastle for a short time around then)

The other witness Gideon - you did read it correctly it is PITLOH, well done you! The GRO index has his birth and death registered with the correct name, but have his marriage as PITLOCH.

As for census returns, the transcriptions of his surname on those are weird and wonderful, despite the scans being fairly clear.
He was Jane Victoria's brother in law so that gives me a bit more detail too.

So, yes, thank you ! Its 'very' useful :-)

Boo

Glad to know my transcription skills are still in working order even though I haven't even looked at any since before Christmas  :D

Hi Boo!
Were you able to track down Jeremiah & Jane's son's history after Jeremiah's death? I recall this was something you were looking into a while back.
Get in touch when you can. (Yes, it's me!  ;D)

Well this is a blast from the past!
Welcome to Rootschat Laurie, lovely to hear from you.

I do have some limited info about Jane Victoria and her son John, will mail later to the address I used years ago.
(if your email address has changed in the last few years, make another couple of posts in here and you will then be able to send me a PrivateMessage and include an up to date email - posting an email on the boards not allowed as it may well be harvested by spammers.)
