1891 Census - Stephen and Ellen Wigham
« on: Tuesday 26 March 13 16:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
Can I ask for fresh eyes to see if you can locate Stephen and Ellen Wigham in the 1891 census. It's the Wigham line I am interested in.

In 1881 and 1871 they are at 60 California Street (or Row) Seaham Co Durham - (They are not there in 1891 as I've been through every image in the Easington census records!)

In 1861 they are at Quarry Row Thornley Co Durham.

They married Chester le Street area December quarter 1853. Ellen's maiden name Turnbull.
In 1841, Stephen is with his parents William and Jane.

Stephen was born in 1831 although some censuses have 1835 or 1833.
Wigham is often mis spelt and I've tried every thing I can think of including the 'creative' 'wigghene' as transcribed in the 1861!

I also can't find anyone in A** trees who has managed to find him nor can I find any deaths for Stephen.
Other info - One tree suggests an Ellen Wigham remarried in 1888 to John Armstrong, another has a death of an Ellen Wigham in 1911 at Tynemouth, but its Stephen I'd like to track down.
Thanks for looking.

Ellen's maiden name Turnbull.

Durham registrar's site shows an Ellen Wigham /Ellen Turnbull marrying John Armstrong in 1888

In view of my reply above I'd suggest you take another look - I think that Ellen is still there in 1891 - only now she is married to John Armstrong.

Ellen Armstrong's birthplace is given as Bickerhill. In the 1861 census Ellen Wigham's birthplace is Biker HIll.

Hi Jen
That's very interesting!! That would fit in nicely with the ages of Stephen and his son James. They had both been miners. I wonder if James didn't stay but Stephen did? James is here in Co Durham in 1882 when he marries Mary ann Kirby. Then in 1891, James and Mary Ann have 3 children including their eldest Stephen. In 1901, they have 7 children living with them and in 1911, they have 4 still with them. James dies in 1944 all in County Durham.
So the hunt goes on but perhaps in USA - Off for a hunt never the less.
Thanks for you brilliant help - yet again :)

I wonder if James didn't stay but Stephen did?

Or perhaps they went together, Stephen died then James returned?

If Stephen didn't die, Ellen's second marriage was bigamous.
