Onehunga 1865 -missing birth record or a name change ?
« on: Thursday 28 March 13 20:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi :-)

I am looking for ideas or help to solve a family mystery.

a Thomas Adam Morning, stated at his marriage in Gisbourne in 1894 that he was born in Onehunga in 1865.  He gave his parents names as Adam Morning and Elizabeth Kean.

I found him and his wife in the Electoral Rolls all the way to his death in 1948 in Blockhouse Bay. On the record of death it does not give his parents names.

I searched for the birth but cannot find one under that name or a variation.  I wondered if perhaps he had been born illegitimately and searched for a birth under his mother's surname Kean but no luck.

Family lore was that he may have changed his name.  If he did I wonder if he only took a new surname, but was originally a Thomas Adam or an Adam Thomas

There is an Adam Morning and an Elizabeth Aitken in the 1851 Scottish Census.

Are there any records or rolls of people in Onehunga in the late 1860s or early 1870s  or any records of people arriving that I could search for clues ?

Any ideas or advice would be welcome.

Regards

Morris

Hi Morris,

The info on a death registration is given by an informant who may not have the recall to be accurate, the info on the marriage reg. will usually be correct as it is given by the person concerned,

Hi Morris,

Unfortunately the birth record you are looking for, could be one of those one that "fell through the cracks". It was still very early days here in colonial New Zealand and not every event was registered as it should have been.

If illegitimate, the information appearing on the marriage record could be untrue although Thomas Adam believed it to be correct. On the other hand he may have deliberately made up a few details to "save face".

Have you tried searching for the birth of any of his siblings? Information to be found here could be helpful.

Hi

Oo....thanks Janette and Beg. That sounds distinctly possible :-)

How did I miss that ? I don't know how many times I have searched..doh !

Thanks Minniehaha.

No 'Morning' births at all in that early period, and no known siblings, and no 'Morning' deaths that might give me a clue.

But now Janette and Beg have found the Morrows then there may be :-)

Are there records for people arriving on ships in NZ at that early period ?

Or any early records or rolls of people living in the Onehunga community ?

Regards

Morris
