Missing Perry Child between 1871-81 sussex

hi i'd like to find the missing birth and death of an unaccounted for child to jacob and annie perry (nee bonieface). The 1911c says they had 9 children, 5 surviving. I have the names of 8 of them which just means i have to find a child that has presumably died between censuses either in sussex or hampshire as they moved to Portsea about 1881 having the rest of their children there. It is equally possible the child was born after 1881 so i'll have to ask this in the hampshire forum if this doesn't work.

I don't know if anyone can search children from their mother's maiden name between 1871 and 1881?
The 3 children i know they had in sussex were henry c 1870 @ wivelsfield, charlotte a 1873 and edward t 1879 both @ haywards heath.  I know all their death dates.

I also know the next child-  alfred jacob perry bn Jun 1881 @ portsea hants, was the other person to die but i haven't been able to find the death index which would be between the 1891c and 1911c. I've tried freebmd for sussex and hants with no luck.

I don't know if anyone can search children from their mother's maiden name between 1871 and 1881?

Mothers maiden names were not shown on the GRO index until the September qtr 1911 and members of the public do not have access to birth certs

It is rare to find a mothers maiden name on an English baptismal entry

I'm curious to know the source of info for the districts and years you have given for these Sussex births, for there does not appear to be an exact match on the FreeBMD website.  Although the two parishes you mention were in the Cuckfield district, Henry & Charlotte's births were registered in Lewes, and had Edward as a second name been acceptable, his birth would have still been 2 years adrift.

Jacob Perry and Annie Bonieface married in Portsea in 1870, so unless Annie had a child before their marriage, your Henry born in Sussex was their first born.

This is his birth and those others officially registered around the area that your Perrys were said to lived in between 1870-1881.

Births Dec 1872  = Frederick William
Births Sep 1873  = Charlotte Annie  Yours
Births Jun 1874  =  Francis Walter
And in the Cuckfield district you only have
Births Jun 1887 George Edward Perry  Not your Edward for a reason given below.
   
The 1881 Portsea census shows the mother Annie with Henry, Charlotte & Edward, but on that census, Edward's birth year and birth place are shown as Portsmouth in 1880.  FreeBMD confirms the birth of Edward Thomas Perry in Portsea in Sept 1879 which suggests the family moved to Hampshire a little earlier than you thought.

The other two Sussex Perrys (Frederick & Francis) are not with your family and nor are they listed as having died in Sussex or Hampshire, so it rather looks as though your missing child was born post 1880.

The initiating post says Edward T was born 1879 - if the 1881 census gives his birthplace as Portsmouth then the likely birth reg looks to be Edward Thomas Perry, Sep qtr 1879 Portsea.

The biggest gaps in the chronology seem to be between the births of Charlotte & Edward, Alfred & Bessie and Herbert & Florence:

Charlotte Annie 28 Sept 1873, also at Wivelisfield.  Jacob now recorded as an engineer.

The Frederick William in 1872 is the son of Robert.

Can't find any children of Jacob baptised in Haywards Heath.

I wonder whether as an engineer he was working on a steamship?

On Henry Charles' probate record from 1898 his executor (likely his father, though not stated) is Jacob Perry, retired 1st class petty officer in the Royal Navy.

Logic tells me that the missing child must be between Charlotte & Edward - between 1873 and 1879.  Looking at the date span, twenty-five years of child bearing is likely to be absolute limit.  How old was she when she married?

Francis Walter in 1874 belonged to Robert as well.
