James Richardson Leicester
« on: Monday 01 April 13 02:30 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping to find out information about the family of James Richardson. Born about 1820 reportedly in Leicester and maybe at St Margarets. His father was William Richardson an engineer, and mother stated to be Ann (Jackson). James may have had an older brother also William, born abt 1817 also described in later Census as an engineer living in London. i think the father William died before 1840. I can't seem to find any birth for James, marriage or death of his parents. Hoping for assistance.
Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,
Welcome to Rootschat.

On the 1841 Census are we looking at James the Frame Work Knitter in Leics Married to Ann or the Carpenter born c 1819 living in St Pancras, Middlesex?
When/where did James Marry and to whom?

Trish :)

Welcome Elizabeth :)

There won't be a birth record for James, as civil registration in England and Wales did not start until 1837. However, this looks a likely baptism:

i think the father William died before 1840.

Presumably this comes from the 20 April 1840 marriage record (Marylebone, London) of William Richardson to Elizabeth Jenner - in which his father is described as "William Richardson, engineer, deceased" - is that right?

Thank you all for responding so quickly. I'm not quite up to speed with all this yet but I hope this goes to all of you rather than just one person.Terrific to find some possible other siblings. Yes the quote about father "William deceased before 1840" comes from the marriage of possible son William and Elizabeth Jenner. Also 1841 Census I am assuming it is James the carpenter living in St Pancras with William (engineer) and Elizabeth and others. James claims to have married Harriet (May) at All Souls London about 1850 but I haven't found a record (information from his 2nd marriage certificate to Mary Ann Harper in 1859 in Victoria Australia) 1851 Census - James living with Harriet and son Frederick at St George Hanover Square but Lancashire is stated as birth place not Leicester. Same James has also claimed Middlesex as birth place (2nd marriage doc) and Leicester on hospital admission in 1857 in Australia. Left for NZ with 2nd wife, children and son Frederick from first marriage fro NZ about 1863. Would be nice to know that his mother was indeed Ann Jackson at St Margarets Leicester then I could be confident he is one and the same fellow. Thanks again. Elizabeth

Hi again - re the 1851 census, do you mean the entry at 18 Norfolk St (HO107/1475/370/31)? If so the 2 month old son seems to be Arthur M, rather than Frederick ???

His likely birth reg: Arthur May RICHARDSON, Mar qtr 1851 St Geo Han Sq 1 41.

You are quite correct I was just coming on line to say I meant Arthur not Frederick but you beat me to it.
