1851 Crouch Field, Hemel Hempstead, GURNEY
« on: Tuesday 07 June 05 18:30 BST (UK) »
I have my GURNEY family living at Crouch Field, Hemel Hempstead in 1843 (birth of son George) and the 1861 census (RG9 839/44 Page 14).  Parents are John 1821 and Emma 1825 (although her age does vary!) Children:
George born 23 Dec 1843 and perhaps more siblings?!   ???

I do have siblings born after 1851, but it still leaves a gap and I'd love to know if there were any more children.

Is anyone able to help?

Thanks,
Jean

Many thanks for that information, I've found it difficult researching Herts!! I always suspected that there were more, and Mary Ann is missing in later census returns.

Thanks again,

Jean

Hi Jean

As you said you were having trouble researching Herts I had a look on the BVRI index & found the births & christenings for 3 more Gurney children born to John & Emma, Charlotte Ann 1853, John Henry 1855 & Emma 1856 in Bovingdon. If you haven't got this info let me know.

Also I found a marriage for John Gurney to Emma Atwood 1st Oct 1842 in Abbots Langley. The ages given were both 20 ?? & the fathers names were John Gurney & William Atwood. Perhaps these are yours. ????

There is a death on Free BMD for a Mary Ann Gurney in Sept qtr 1850 recorded in Berkhamstead. Could be your Mary Ann as Berkhamstead isn't very far away from Bovingdon or Box Moor.

Hope some of this helps you.

Hi Maddie,

That's really kind of you, the only one of the children I knew about was Emma, but I don't have any of their details of birth or christening, so that would be great.  I don't think that Charlotte Ann or John Henry survived either but I'll check the census records and have a look at the BMD sites.

You have got the right marriage, I have a copy of the certificate.  I'm pretty sure that Emma lied about her age on the certificate as her age in the census is consistently three years younger meaning that she was 17 when they married!!  I think that Berkhamstead may well be correct for burials as I have the microfiche of MI's for Hemel Hempstead and none of the family were buried there.

Thanks very much for all your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Jean

Hi Jean

I'm glad to help but I think I might be misleading you on the 3 other children born in Bovingdon.

I have just been looking at the 1881 & spotted Charlotte Ann & Emma in Kent. As your Emma was still in Crouchfield I believe the others were born to another John & Emma Gurney in Bovingdon. !!!!!! Loads of Gurney's in Herts. There isn't any births on the BVRI for the other children with your John & Emma on the 1881.

Glad I got the correct marriage any way.

Regards
Maddie

Hi Ray.

Thanks very much for that. Sukey/Sandra parents appear to have been John Gurney & Ann Field. For ages I have wondered why my Thomas William Coxhead named one of his daughters Mary Field Williams. Thomas was transported to Australia as Thomas Williams, parents Thomas Coxhead (no further info) & Charlotte Bean whose parents were John & Sukey Gurney. On his D/C Jesse is shown as his father. I have only just found the Field connection.

John Gurney & Ann Field m. at Great Stanmore, London, Thomas C  m. Charlotte Bean m. at St. Giles, Camberwell, Surrey & Sukey m. at Barcombe, Sussex. A mile of Coxheads came from Hereford & trying to trace them back further is a real hassle. It would be great to find out what the Coxheads, Beans & Gurneys did for a living. Will push on.

Cheers,
